These just happen to be filled with laughing gas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t do it that often. It\u2019s funny for about 30 seconds,\u201d said a concertgoer outside Red Rocks Amphitheatre, who was preparing to inhale nitrous oxide from a balloon before The String Cheese Incident played there in mid-July. She requested anonymity for fear of job reprisal. \u201cThere\u2019s not really that much thought to it. It\u2019s a stupid drug. The dumbest out of them all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perched in the bed of a silver pick-up with friends in Lower South Lot 1, the 20-something woman pinched the end of the pastel blue balloon as she brought it to her lips, then inhaled until the balloon went limp. A minute or so of euphoric wooziness followed, and her voice briefly dropped in pitch due to the density of the gas.\u00a0Elsewhere in the parking lot, vendors \u2014 nitrous tanks poking out of their trunks \u2014 were selling balloons in different sizes, at\u00a0$10 to $30 a pop. (Vendors approached by The Denver Post at Red Rocks weren\u2019t interested in commenting.)<\/p>\n<p>Nitrous oxide powers whip cream canisters and sedates patients in dentists\u2019 offices, but huffing it for fun can lead to addiction, injury and death. Still, the practice is becoming more common, not just in parks and concerts, but in widely imitated viral videos. A wave of colorfully branded new nitrous products has alarmed medical professionals who see it as a public health problem that\u2019s hard to track, treat and warn against \u2014 even as most users consider it to be harmless fun.<\/p>\n<p>Balloons and cannisters, known as whippets, have been a common sight for decades in concert-venue parking lots, particularly in Colorado\u2019s thriving jam-band scene at Phish, Dead and Company, Widespread Panic, and other shows. It\u2019s cheekily known as \u201chippie crack\u201d because of its association with those bands, and people can buy nitrous from vendors at the unofficial marketplace of drugs, jewelry and merchandise that often accompanies these shows.<\/p>\n<p>The gas is perfectly legal to buy (for those over 18) when used for medical or culinary purposes, though not for recreational use. Nevertheless, it is widely available in head shops and online.<\/p>\n<p>But when used incorrectly \u2014 and not, for example, under the supervision of a dentist \u2014 inhaling nitrous \u201ccan lead to asphyxiation and, if deprived of too much oxygen, life-threatening seizures or even death,\u201d said Shireen Banerji, director of Rocky Mountain Poison &amp; Drug Safety.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the potential for brain damage, recreational users can get frostbite of the mouth and soft palate, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medpagetoday.com\/emergencymedicine\/emergencymedicine\/116377?\">New England Journal of Medicine study<\/a> that documented a severe injury involving the mouth and throat. It\u2019s a condition sometimes referred to as \u201clung freeze.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the risks, nitrous abuse appears to be growing \u2014 and trendy. <a href=\"https:\/\/datac.ca\/nitrous-oxide-abuse-and-deaths-on-the-rise-in-the-u-s\/\">Between 2019 and 2023<\/a>, the U.S. saw an alarming, 110% increase in deaths due to hypoxia (or oxygen deprivation to the brain) stemming from nitrous oxide abuse, according to researchers. Nitrous-related emergency room visits grew by 32% over five years, said the <a href=\"https:\/\/datac.ca\/nitrous-oxide-abuse-and-deaths-on-the-rise-in-the-u-s\/\">Drug Abuse Warning Network.<\/a> The data did not include the number of visits or people affected.<\/p>\n<p>Data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/news\/2025\/04\/nitrous-oxide-abuse-study\/index.html\">National Survey on Drug Use and Health<\/a> published in 2024 showed that 13 million people have tried nitrous for recreational purposes in their lifetimes, as compared with 224.3 million people ages 12 and older who have tried alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, 2.9 million Americans 12 and older used inhalants in the past year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/reports\/rpt47100\/NSDUHDetailedTabs2023_v1\/NSDUHDetailedTabs2023_v1\/2023-nsduh-detailed-tables-sect1pe.htm#tab1.38a\">according to the survey<\/a>. That covers nitrous oxide, but also poppers, household solvents and aerosols. The survey found that roughly 564,000 people aged 12 to 17 also used inhalants within the last year.<\/p>\n<p>Social media <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/galaxy-gas-nitrous-oxide-social-media-controversy\/\">seems to be glorifying it<\/a>, and posts about nitrous have racked up tens of millions of views, while the companies that sell \u2014 such as Galaxy Gas, ExoticWhip, and Monster Gas \u2014 are offering newly cand-colored branding, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which renewed warnings of nitrous abuse and addiction this year.<\/p>\n<p>The result is a resurgence that has burnished nitrous\u2019s longtime reputation among users as a cheap, easy high \u2014 and one that has leaked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/inside-the-rise-and-fall-of-galaxy-gas-1235212375\/\">out of concert parking lots and into the mainstream.<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7225269\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone size-article_inline\"><img class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/a-common-sight-at-concerts-nitrous-oxide-abuse-is-soaring-prompting-health-concerns.jpg\" alt=\"A man walks through Lower South Lot 1 parking lot at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre with three large balloons filled with nitrous oxide before The String Cheese Incident concert in Morrison, Colorado, on Saturday, July 19, 2025. (Photo by Andy Cross\/The Denver Post)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Easy to get<\/h4>\n<p>The latest FDA warnings on nitrous were prompted by \u201can increase in reports of adverse events after inhalation \u2026\u201d according to a June update from the agency. That means increased risks of vitamin B12-deficiency and \u201crelated neurological and hematological effects associated with heavy use,\u201d said the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26496821\/\">National Institutes of Health<\/a>. Researchers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/74\/wr\/mm7412a3.htm\">Centers for Disease Control<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/olemiss.edu\/news\/2025\/04\/nitrous-oxide-abuse-study\/index.html\">University of Mississippi<\/a>, Michigan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/today.wayne.edu\/medicine\/news\/2025\/04\/17\/new-report-outlines-nitrous-oxide-misuse-on-the-rise-in-michigan-teens-and-adults-66053\">Wayne State University<\/a> and others have also expressed concern this year about the rise they\u2019ve documented in nitrous addiction and attributed deaths.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/NitrousOxide\/comments\/m9noj4\/whats_up_denver\/?rdt=63044\">On Reddit<\/a>, however, users casually discuss buying 35 to 50 lb. tanks of food-grade nitrous before concerts from Phish and Billy Strings, whether from Denver wholesalers such as Tanks Express and Gargamel\u2019s Kitchen, or local head shops like Purple Haze and online retailers such as Amazon, eBay and Walmart.<\/p>\n<p>Tanks Express, which uses images from \u201cFear and Loathing in Las Vegas\u201d to advertise 24\/7 delivery of nitrous tanks to Denver and Boulder customers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tanksexpress\/?hl=en\">on Instagram<\/a>, did not respond to a request for comment. Gargamel\u2019s Kitchen owner Jacob Catanzarite agreed to an interview but did not respond to follow-up messages.<\/p>\n<p>Nitrous-product sales have gone up in recent months at Myxed Up Creations, said Kyle Manibusan, assistant manager at the 5800 E. Colfax Ave. head shop location. He doesn\u2019t question why people buy nitrous products there, but he does like to give \u201csome knowledge and responsibility\u201d before they purchase it, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis product can be used for many different things, including food services,\u201d he said. \u201cBut you\u2019re an adult and you know what you\u2019re using it for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His store sells chargers \u2014 or small, individual propellant canisters \u2014 in boxes of 50 from brands such as Erotica and Whip-It! A metal rack along the back wall contains larger canisters from Space Gas, Euro Gas and Hippie Whippy.<\/p>\n<p>Even as sales have risen, Manibusan said he\u2019s been concerned by the sight of spent chargers strewn across playgrounds and parks in Aurora. His shop only sells to customers 21 and up, and he said he believes kids shouldn\u2019t go anywhere near it.<\/p>\n<p>Aurora city officials have said it\u2019s an under-regulated market that overlaps with the sale of illegal drugs and paraphernalia available at gas stations. As a result, they will be voting this month on whether to ban them and step up enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison to the rise of nitrous, the use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices among middle and high school students declined between 2023 and 2024 by 5.9% \u2014 or about 1.63 million students, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/tobacco-products\/youth-and-tobacco\/results-annual-national-youth-tobacco-survey-nyts#2024%20Findings%20on%20Youth%20Use%20for%20E-Cigarette%20Products\">according to the FDA<\/a> \u2014 from a high of 7.7% (or 2.13 million). (Eli Imadali\/Special to The Denver Post)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the state level, nitrous abuse is hard to track.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is mainly because it\u2019s quick-acting and often used as a supplemental drug alongside other substances, making it difficult to pinpoint,\u201d said Denver Health spokeswoman Deydra Bringas. (Photo by Andy Cross\/The Denver Post)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Concert enforcement varies<\/h4>\n<p>Parking lot security at the city-owned Red Rocks is handled by park service employees and off-duty cops, and paid for by venue owner Denver Arts &amp; Venues. It is not the responsibility of concert promoters, said Denver Arts &amp; Venues spokesman Brian Kitts. Security officials at Red Rocks can occasionally be seen patrolling the parking lots before, during and after shows. But they hardly ever bust illegal drug users and vendors, concertgoers told The Denver Post.<\/p>\n<p>There are no reports or citations for nitrous use or sales from the Red Rocks parking lots this year, according to the Denver Police Department. However, at Phish\u2019s July 3-5 concerts at the University of Colorado\u2019s Folsom Field, security officials seized 61 nitrous oxide tanks and issued one citation related to nitrous oxide throughout the three-day series, said CU\u2019s Director of Issues Management and spokesperson Nicole Mueksch.<\/p>\n<p>The nitrous tanks were confiscated under a city ordinance stating that no one can knowingly inhale fumes for the purpose of causing \u201ceuphoria, excitement, exhilaration, stupefaction, or dulled senses of the nervous system\u201d \u2014 nor can they possess or buy \u201ctoxic vapors\u201d for that reason.<\/p>\n<p>The spike in abuse is having a corrosive effect on the jam-band scene, said Khalil Simon, leader of the Denver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2023\/02\/27\/denvers-loudest-6-piece-street-band-is-ready-to-show-their-metal-and-their-meddle\/\">street-music group Brothers of Brass<\/a>, which often plays in parking lots before concerts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you have 20 tanks going off all around you, it\u2019s one of the few things that can cut through a 9-piece brass band with horns and drums,\u201d said Simon, the band\u2019s tuba player, who largely quit playing Phish shows due to the \u201cout of control\u201d takeover of nitrous vendors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re also trying to play for tips and everyone\u2019s spending all the cash in their pockets on these balloons,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Simon posted on Facebook last year that Brothers of Brass were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/denverbrassband\/posts\/pfbid02Uj4TJfEyovyWkCF3uByzbU8MHrwcm5iLAvJxqPb82WQfZ6TzUPcJTekbcfueAq21l\">done with Phish<\/a>, despite eight years of well-received shows outside its concerts. The group began following Phish around the country in 2016 \u2014 starting at the band\u2019s annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2025\/02\/18\/phish-folsom-field-july-boulder-tickets\/\">Dick\u2019s Sporting Goods Park run<\/a> in Commerce City \u2014 and busking in the ad-hoc markets that popped up before shows (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/entertainment\/article\/shakedown-street-golden-gate-park-20770733.php\">Shakedown Street<\/a>, as they\u2019re generally known, after the Grateful Dead song).<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, his band would collect thousands of dollars in tips in a couple of hours, whether outside Phish weekends in New York City or along the Front Range. Over the past two years, however, nitrous vendors have muscled out nearly every other aspect of that scene, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is one of those cases where drug dealers win,\u201d he told The Denver Post. \u201cThey\u2019re being persistent for years and years and multiplying, and cops don\u2019t do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commerce City Police, who handled security outside Phish\u2019s Dick\u2019s Sporting Goods Park shows, did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<h4>\u201cWay worse than weed\u201d<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cI know Colorado\u2019s drug-friendly, but I didn\u2019t know it would blow up like this. Kids are losing their brain cells now that it\u2019s been rebranded,\u201d Simon said. \u201cIt\u2019s way worse than weed or anything like that. It straight up makes you dumb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is also the issue of long-term effects,\u201d Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Safety\u2019s Banerji said. \u201cChronic use can result in anemias and effects to the brain, blood, spinal cord and nervous system. It\u2019s not harmless. But people still don\u2019t think of it in terms of chronic toxicity.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"related right\"> <\/aside>\n<p>She encouraged anyone with questions about nitrous oxide to call Rocky Mountain Poison &amp; Drug Safety\u2019s free, 24\/7 anonymous hotline at 866-871-4980 or learn more at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rmpds.org\/\">rmpds.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Most users dismissed side effects and medical concerns when asked about nitrous outside Red Rocks. Some were planning on bringing drugs such as psilocybin mushrooms and cannabis inside with them for the show, but leaving the \u201cdumb fun\u201d of whippets in the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do it for the \u2018whomp whomp,&#8217;\u201d said a woman holding a translucent balloon that had been filled by a golden-colored tank in her trunk. She and her friends, who described the experience as blissfully disconnected, declined to give their names due to professional concerns.
