Decontamination, the process of removing or killing microorganisms, has become a common step in post-harvest processing. Traditional methods come with trade-offs that can alter the plant\u2019s potency, aroma, or appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Until recently, most producers relied on heat-based techniques, such as pasteurization, or surface treatments, including ozone and ultraviolet (UV) light exposure. While effective in food and agriculture, these methods often fail to penetrate dense cannabis flowers, allowing microbes hidden deep inside to survive. Other approaches, such as gamma and electron-beam (E-beam) irradiation, have been used safely in the food industry for decades to sterilize spices, produce, and packaged goods without affecting nutritional quality or taste.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Now, X-ray decontamination is emerging as a promising adaptation of these proven methods for cannabis. The technology penetrates through the entire flower, destroying microbial DNA while leaving cannabinoids and terpenes intact.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jeff Adams, founder of XRPure, explains the process through a simple visual analogy:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIf you imagine a single mold spore as the size of a golf ball,\u201d Adams says, \u201cthe DNA strands inside that spore are about the size of a needle. The X-rays, on that same scale, are the size of those needles\u2014they pass through the \u2018golf ball\u2019 and target the DNA directly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Because plant cells are vastly larger on this scale, roughly fifteen feet in diameter, the X-rays pass through them virtually untouched.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThey\u2019re targeting only the things that are on their size scale,\u201d he adds, \u201cwhich makes X-ray particularly effective at killing microbes while leaving the rest of the plant unharmed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">By contrast, chemical or fog-based decontamination methods rely on molecules that interact with terpene and cannabinoid compounds of similar size, raising the risk of chemical reactions that can degrade flavor and aroma. X-ray avoids this issue entirely by working on a different physical scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Finally, Adams and his team note that X-ray systems meet the highest FDA safety standards and<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are sealed<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to prevent any radiation leakage. Operators don\u2019t require special protective equipment or restricted rooms. \u201cIt\u2019s a very safe, simple, and efficient technology,\u201d says Sales Manager Joseph Bancheri, \u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that\u2019s already built<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to comply with federal safety protocols if and when national cannabis legalization arrives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Industry Has A Mold Problem<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Despite the technology\u2019s promise, decontamination in general is an ongoing debate within the cannabis industry. Some purists argue that remediation of any kind undermines the plant\u2019s natural integrity, insisting that skilled cultivators should be able to grow clean cannabis without relying on post-harvest interventions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jeff Adams, founder of XRPure, acknowledges that sentiment but believes X-ray remediation represents a fundamentally different approach from heat or chemical-based methods.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0\u201cOne interesting thing about X-ray,\u201d Adams explains, \u201cis that the wavelength is almost<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">exactly<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the same size as the DNA strand in a microbe. As it passes through the flower, those DNA strands absorb energy from the X-ray, which breaks them apart and essentially kills the microbe. It\u2019s not a chemical reaction with the plant; it\u2019s literally targeting the microbial DNA.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That precise mechanism is what makes X-ray decontamination less likely to alter the plant\u2019s terpenes and cannabinoids. \u201cWe completely understand the concern about maintaining quality,\u201d Adams says.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">deally, everyone would grow perfectly clean cannabis.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the reality is that the same environment that\u2019s<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">good<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">for cultivating<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a plant<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is also<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">good for<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">growing microbes.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Even the best operations in the country struggle with mold and mildew contamination.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For producers operating at scale, those challenges can be costly. Adams points out that even<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">small<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">microbial contamination can lead to failed lab tests, lost batches, and reputational damage. \u201cWe provide a way to address contamination immediately after harvest\u2014before packaging\u2014so the product stays stable and clean on the shelf,\u201d he explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Regardless, there\u2019s a stigma. Cannabis that has been \u201ctreated\u201d or \u201cremediated\u201d often sells for less, and many growers choose not to disclose the use of decontamination technology. \u201cThat\u2019s just the reality of the market right now,\u201d Adams says. \u201cBut we believe that clean cannabis is actually better for consumers. No one wants to inhale mold spores, and medical patients can be especially sensitive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Interestingly, consumer perception may be shifting. Adams cites a recent survey the company conducted showing that while 90% of respondents wanted transparency about whether<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a product had been remediated<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, 56% said they would be more likely to purchase treated cannabis, particularly in the medical market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sales Manager Joseph Bancheri<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">adds<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that skepticism often<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">comes down to<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">scale and economics.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSome of the smaller or legacy-style growers, what I call the \u2018tree-hugger naturalists\u2019, don\u2019t want to use any kind of remediation,\u201d he says. \u201cI get it.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">if you\u2019re losing 10% of your crop to<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">microbials<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, that\u2019s a<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">big hit<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Once you\u2019re producing 100 pounds or more per month, it starts making sense to have an in-house system or send it out for treatment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bancheri also points out that testing standards vary dramatically by state. Nevada allows up to 10,000 colony-forming units (CFU) per gram of microbial matter, while Illinois caps it at 1,000, and some states go as high as 100,000. \u201cAt 10,000 CFU, you\u2019re in a reasonable middle ground,\u201d Adams notes. \u201cIt protects medical patients but still allows growers to operate realistically. At 1,000 CFU, it becomes<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">challenging<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, even for the cleanest facilities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Aspergillus, the<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">common<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">black mold sometimes found in household bathrooms, remains the biggest microbial culprit and is strictly prohibited in most states. \u201cIt\u2019s airborne, it\u2019s everywhere,\u201d Adams says. \u201cEven a sealed HVAC system can\u2019t completely prevent it. And when you\u2019re inhaling, your lungs don\u2019t have the same defenses your stomach does when you eat contaminated food. That\u2019s why this matters for public health.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For now, the patchwork of state regulations keeps the debate alive. \u201cEvery state is its own island,\u201d Bancheri adds. \u201cSome base their limits on food safety data, others make up their own thresholds. Until there\u2019s federal legalization, it\u2019s going to stay inconsistent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cost vs. Benefits<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But for many growers, cost remains the deciding factor. \u201cThe biggest complaint out there,\u201d Adams concedes, \u201cis that people don\u2019t want to add one more expense to their production. X-ray technology is more expensive than other remediation methods.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">when you<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">look at<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the numbers, the payback can<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">happen<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">very<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">fast<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cannabis is a valuable product, and your losses can pile up quickly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To help make the technology accessible, XRPure offers leasing programs that spread costs across three- or four-year terms, covering both the machine and its maintenance. \u201cThat way, you don\u2019t have to come up with a big chunk of money all at once,\u201d Adams says. \u201cFor cultivators producing 300 to 400 pounds per month, the math works out\u2014they\u2019re actually saving money. For smaller growers, there are toll processors that can run the service for them, and we\u2019re about to launch a mobile system that can drive right up to your farm, process your flower, and move on to the next.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While X-ray delivers what Adams calls \u201cthe very best decontamination process,\u201d it remains one piece of a broader post-harvest preservation puzzle\u2014from packaging to retail storage. It\u2019s challenging out there, but investing in technology that protects the plant\u2019s integrity and keeps customers coming back can pay off in the long term<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Adams adds, \u201cWe\u2019re just one piece of the puzzle, but hopefully a helpful one. As the industry moves toward medical markets and stricter standards, clean cannabis will equal quality cannabis.
