We always thought that the older generations were afraid that every Tom, Dick, and Harry would be far too stoned to do anything, and that they were against any kind of cannabis legalization.

We truly didn’t see how the tables would turn. Over time, our grandparents became even more pro-weed than the youth.

The plot twist

According to the results of a YouGov poll, which was released in April 2026, a majority of Americans support cannabis legalization. While a stark majority of Americans back medical cannabis use, more than half of them also support recreational pot use. However, they also found that respondents between 45 and 64 years of age are more supportive of cannabis legalization compared to younger respondents.

It’s now clear that most older Americans have changed their minds, and not just because it was trendy for their generation.

Gradually, more middle-aged and senior citizens began experimenting with weed, and were surprised by the sheer relief from the benefits it brought about. There were many different scenarios: someone’s grandmother had to go through chemotherapy and wasn’t able to keep food down, and they gave weed a try. They thought it could have actually saved her life.

Someone’s dad was taking painkillers for years due to chronic pain, but found that CBD worked even better, without the side effects. Your neighbor’s tried almost everything to treat her arthritis, but the only thing that helped is medical cannabis, thanks to someone’s suggestion.

Why more older Americans are saying yes to weed

More older Americans are also trying weed, and the numbers have hit record highs.

According to a recent study published in the JAMA Network, senior citizens are increasingly more open-minded about trying cannabis for various aging-related conditions. “We know that cannabis use is increasing in most age groups. But interestingly not in adolescents. It’s pretty flat with adolescence, and that tracks (with usage rates among this cohort with) other substances,” explains Angela Bryan, a University of Colorado psychology and neuroscience professor, to BizWest.

To them, it’s more personal. The elderly struggle with many more conditions, such as cancer, arthritis, chronic pain, insomnia, and so much more. Aging takes a serious toll on the human body, and it can be extremely challenging to find solutions that really work. They just want something that makes them feel better.

They also trust their doctors. After all, the elderly tend to trust medical opinions more than hearsay, and when a reliable doctor recommends medical cannabis, they’ll likely trust that opinion more.

And guess what? Cannabis works.

According to the findings of a 2023 study out of Israel, elderly patients reported a significant decrease in pain, as well as depression and opioid use. For the study, Israeli researchers analyzed the findings among 119 elderly patients with a mean age of 79, all of whom were prescribed medical marijuana products. Most of them were struggling with chronic pain and consumed pot through tinctures.

Study authors reported that patients decreased opioid use by almost half after cannabis treatment, a finding that is consistent with other studies.

“Cannabis contributes to the amelioration of depressive symptoms… while also achieving discernible pain alleviation,” they concluded. “Our findings also demonstrate the relatively favorable safety profile of cannabis therapy” among elderly patients.

When weed does improve your quality of life, Reefer Madness does seem like some kind of hazy myth that was nothing more than anti-weed propaganda… which it was.

Also, the older generation has something special the rest of us don’t: perspective. They’ve witnessed how the rules have changed on so many vices: gambling, tobacco, and alcohol. They still recall how many things weren’t allowed, and then one day, they were regulated or treated as something pretty much normal. It also helps that they actually lived through the War on Drugs, and witnessed for themselves how badly prohibition failed. They saw the countless arrests, courtroom drama, and so much more, all so unnecessary because of the propaganda.

Besides, back in their heyday, a lot of them tried it in passing. During their youth in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, smoking pot casually during a party didn’t carry the same stigma as it did right before recreational cannabis legalization began spreading in the United States a few years ago.

Conclusion

The shift in attitudes represents one of the more shocking reversals when it comes to public opinion on cannabis reform.

For decades, we assumed that cannabis legalization was a cause that belonged to the younger generation. But the evidence points the other way, with elderly Americans among the fastest-growing demographics supporting cannabis legalization. So much so, that entire cannabis product lines have been built to cater to their specific needs.

Once again, it isn’t because of trends or fashion that is driving this changed. It’s the lived experience of seniors, a generation more prone to arthritis, chronic pain, and various ailments due to cancer. They have found true relief where pharmaceuticals often failed. But their perspective matters too: they saw once-taboo vices, such as alcohol, gambling, and tobacco, become normalized.

This doesn’t mean that all forms of cannabis is completely risk-free for older adults. In fact, they should use it with care, best under medical guidance, since cannabis has interactions with other medications.

But the lessons we learned here show that when policy affects one’s health, comfort, and dignity, personal experiences can outweigh decades-old assumptions.

SENIORS FOR WEED, READ ON…..

WHY SENIORS LOVE THE CANNABIS PLANT!

Why Do Older Generations Support Legalization More Than We Expected?
