However, it only contains 1 per cent THC \u2014 the chemical responsible for the \u201chigh\u201d people feel when smoking marijuana, which contains about 5 to 20 per cent THC.<\/p>\n<p>Growing industrial hemp under license is already legal in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Franks said the industry could help SA recover from the fallout of the closure of Holden\u2019s Elizabeth manufacturing plant, which experts say will likely result in 13,000 jobs losses across Holden and its supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>She said the Greens believed the industry would be a good fit for retrenched Holden workers and the party was keen to work with Manufacturing and Innovation Minister Kyam Maher to explore this possibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe single largest use for hemp fibre produced in North America is for automotive composite products,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHemp fibre is worth serious consideration for automotive composite applications as it is easy to process and recycle, while it can also be customised to meet a variety of specifications and different manufacturing systems, as is evident in Europe and America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Franks said the hemp industry in the US grew by 22 per cent in 2014 and had an annual retail turnover of $620 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouth Australia has an unemployment rate that needs to be urgently addressed, so it makes sense for us to think about prospective industries like the hemp industry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Industrial Hemp Association of SA spokeswoman Ruth Trigg said the industry could provide a lifeline to workers affected by the Holden closure.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Trigg said industrial hemp was a useful renewable material that used less water, pesticides and fertilisers than other fibre crops.<\/p>\n<p>Hemp can also be used to make a concrete-like product called hempcrete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can revolutionise the building industry using the qualities of hempcrete for fire retardant, insulation, acoustics, for absorbing CO2 for the rest of its life, and for ease of use as a pourable slurry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The mayors of Tea Tree Gully, Salisbury and Playford councils said the idea was worth looking into.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this industry can provide jobs then it should be investigated,\u201d Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty said.<\/p>\n<p>Tea Tree Gully Mayor Kevin Knight said: \u201cWe have to start looking outside the square, as long as there\u2019s no risk with the drug part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Salisbury Mayor Gillian Aldridge said she thought it was a \u201cgreat idea\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m always excited for new manufacturing opportunities, which create jobs in the area,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturing and Innovation Minister Kyam Maher revealed in State Parliament this month that he owns a pair of brown jeans made from hemp.<\/p>\n<p>He is planning to meet with the Industrial Hemp Association of SA to discuss its proposal to legalise hemp production in SA, although his office is yet to arrange a date.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/www.420magazine.com\/gallery\/data\/1412\/6968.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>News Moderator: Jacob Redmond <a href=\"http:\/\/www.420magazine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">420 MAGAZINE \u00ae<\/a><br \/>\nFull Article: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/news\/legalising-cannabis-hemp-farms-to-solve-sas-jobs-crisis\/story-e6frg6n6-1227440531666\" target=\"_blank\">Cookies must be enabled. | The Australian<\/a><br \/>\nAuthor: Elizabeth Henson<br \/>\nContact: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/help\/contactus\" target=\"_blank\">Cookies must be enabled. | The Australian<\/a><br \/>\nPhoto Credit: Noelle Bobrige<br \/>\nWebsite: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cookies must be enabled. | The Australian<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Legalizing cannabis farms to make clothes, building materials and beauty products could be part of the solution to South Australia\u2019s&#8230;
