{"id":5418,"date":"2016-01-22T05:48:50","date_gmt":"2016-01-22T05:48:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.420magazine.com\/?p=4164"},"modified":"2016-01-22T05:48:50","modified_gmt":"2016-01-22T05:48:50","slug":"hawaii-ab-hopeful-hemp-could-be-a-replacement-for-sugar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/hawaii-ab-hopeful-hemp-could-be-a-replacement-for-sugar\/","title":{"rendered":"Hawaii: A&amp;B Hopeful Hemp Could Be A Replacement For Sugar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 0 5px 5px;float:right;height:100px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/hawaii-ab-hopeful-hemp-could-be-a-replacement-for-sugar\/\" send=\"true\" layout=\"standard\" width=\"450\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div><p>Alexander and Baldwin Inc. is considering planting hemp for its diversified agriculture model in Hawaii after its announcement last week that it was \u201ctransitioning out of farming sugar\u201d at its Maui plantation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is unclear under what conditions the federal and state laws allow the cultivation of industrial hemp, but we are pursuing legal interpretations,\u201d a spokesperson from A&amp;B said. \u201cOnce we are assured the activity is legal, we stand ready to begin trial plantings at [Hawaiian Commercial &amp; Sugar]. There is much to learn about the performance of hemp cultivation in our tropical climate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, A&amp;B said it will shift to a \u201cdiversified agricultural model\u201d for its 36,000-acre plantation on Maui. Sugar operations will begin to be phased out by the end of 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The news came as a blow to Hawaii leaders as they worried about the future of the Maui economy. However, hemp could offer these leaders some solace.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Agricultural Act of 2014 allows universities and state agricultural offices to research hemp, which is part cannabis plant, like marijuana. Unlike marijuana, however, it has a very low tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, content. THC is a controlled substance.<\/p>\n<p>The act and an accompanying Senate bill allowed the University of Hawaii at Manoa to research uses of hemp, such as biofuel and toxin removal for hemp in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The project finished in December of last year and an accompanying report was issued last week.<br \/>\nRep.
