On Thursday night, the question of whether to end cannabis prohibition came up during a debate between Republican candidates for North Dakota&#8217;s governor.<\/p>\n<p>With less than a month to go before a nominee is endorsed\u00a0by party insiders at the state GOP convention, the contenders were divided\u00a0when asked about possible ballot measures on legalization and medical cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>State Rep. The <a href=\"https:\/\/vip.sos.nd.gov\/pdfs\/measures%20Info\/Petitions%20Being%20Circulated\/11.30.2015.NDCCA.Final.wPetitionTitle&amp;Changes.pdf\">measure<\/a>, which would allow registered patients to possess up to three ounces of cannabis and grow as many as eight plants if they live further than 40 miles from a dispensary, <a href=\"http:\/\/bismarcktribune.com\/news\/local\/govt-and-politics\/medical-marijuana-petitions-to-begin-circulation\/article_b5457315-bc40-57af-bacc-388599a11b95.html\">needs<\/a>\u00a013,452 valid signatures from registered voters by July 11 in order to\u00a0qualify.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"http:\/\/bismarcktribune.com\/news\/state-and-regional\/poll-n-d-accepts-medical-marijuana-not-recreational\/article_55de99e8-567b-11e4-9b12-6f5267f9b24a.html\">October 2014 poll<\/a> found that 47\u00a0percent of North Dakotans support medical marijuana, with 41 percent opposed and nine percent undecided.<\/p>\n<p>North Dakota has traditionally chosen its nominees for elected office at partisan conventions such as the one the state GOP is holding April 1-3. While\u00a0Becker and Stenehjem say they will abide the outcome of the convention, Burgum says he will run for the nod from voters\u00a0in the state&#8217;s June 14 primary.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/sayanythingblog.com\/entry\/poll-stenehjem-leading-burgum-in-governors-race-trump-leading-republican-presidential-candidates\/\">poll<\/a> conducted last month found Stenehjem leading Burgum 59\u00a0percent to 10\u00a0percent, with 31 percent undecided. Becker&#8217;s names was omitted from the survey.<\/p>\n<p>There is currently no Democratic candidate for the office, which has been held by Republicans since 1992.
