Smoking lots and lots of weed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I read this all before<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two years ago, when we first met Abbi Abrams and Ilana Wexler, the BFFs at the center of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Broad City,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> they were doing the same exact things, and much to the astonishment of viewers, the two <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">real<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> characters exposed us to unabashed smoking of marijuana on our television screens. These were not villainous drug abusers, or perfect protagonists regrettably \u201cexperimenting\u201d with pot, but modern, relatable twenty-somethings enjoying the occasional joint. It wasn\u2019t long before articles proclaiming \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2014\/02\/10\/broad-city-rise-female-stoner\/4324\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Rise of the Female Stoner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d and \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/katherine-brooks\/broad-city-women_b_4931644.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5 Reasons the \u2018Broad City\u2019 Women are the Stoner Heroines You\u2019ve Been Waiting For<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d were published, and there was much ado about female-weed-smoking. Before long, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer (the real life counterparts and creators of the show) were being <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2015\/03\/broad-city-ilana-glazer-abbi-jacobson.html#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">handed pot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by adoring fans on the street. Abbi, Ilana, and Broad City were the face of the female stoner movement. The revolution <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">would <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">be televised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Let \u2018em say what they gonna say<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over the last two years and twenty plus episodes, the conversation shifted away from their pot-toking antics and toward discussions of feminism, New York life, and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">novelty<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of two females creating and starring in a show about two females. These are important, if not frustrating topics, but it seems as though the #weedtalk has died down, even as the two women continue to smoke more than ever. So, why aren\u2019t we talking about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Broad City <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lighting up anymore?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>They gonna feel how they gonna feel<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Abbi and Ilana have actually never made a big deal about smoking weed. While marijuana has had supporting roles in past television comedies (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Weeds, Louie, Workaholics<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), weed almost acts as a co-star of the show, sharing screen time when the characters go to work (Ilana at her boring temp job, Abbi at her boring coat checking gig), out to dinner (also smoking out the bus boy), or just hanging out in their apartments. In an episode featuring renowned toker, Seth Rogen, Abi and her date celebrate the acquisition of an air conditioner during a summer heat wave by dancing and sharing a spliff. Another episode has Ilana getting high in order to remember where she lost her remote control. Smoking weed is as essential and trivial as waking up late for work or meeting a friend for lunch. Even their most outrageous weed-induced moments \u2013 holding in \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=upK3vFNOvEI\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nature\u2019s pocket<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d setting off the fire alarm at a dentist\u2019s office, smoking out <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">high school students<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 never seem to be because they smoked weed, but rather that they just made a poor decision. \u00a0Abbi and Ilana still might be leading the stoner revolution, but it\u2019s a quiet one, and it\u2019s better for that quiet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Trying to work like a boss<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The two weed geniuses have been accompanied by big names in pop and pot culture. Guests have included Seth Rogen, Kelly Ripa, Melissa Leo and, later this season, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HillaryClinton\/status\/675382057388916736\/photo\/1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hillary Clinton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. While their past cameo stars have indulgently toked with them, it\u2019s safe to assume Clinton didn\u2019t inhale in the episode. From puking in toilets to becoming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/broadcity\/status\/675382110857728001\/photo\/1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">best friends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marijuana.com\/blog\/news\/2016\/01\/clinton-its-appropriate-for-states-to-legalize-marijuana\/\">Democratic Frontrunner<\/a>\/#Boss herself, Abbi and Ilana have come a long way. Not bad for a couple of stoners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I love it, baby. Hey, you should too<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While Abbi and Ilana don\u2019t have everything figured out \u2014or anything figured out, really\u2014they manage to be spectacular representations for the \u201cstoner\u201d community. Aside from being middle class and college-educated, every single episode showcases the two supporting one another, being empathetic and emotionally vulnerable, sexually open and culturally understanding. They\u2019re relatable twenty-somethings, struggling through the grind of city life, who happen to smoke weed. Pot smoking is just one aspect of these full, well-rounded characters. They\u2019re broke, single(ish), hate their jobs, and are seemingly aimless, but they love it.
