{"id":622,"date":"2012-08-28T07:46:13","date_gmt":"2012-08-28T07:46:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marijuana.net\/?p=19715"},"modified":"2012-08-28T07:46:13","modified_gmt":"2012-08-28T07:46:13","slug":"veterans-may-catch-a-break-in-oregon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/veterans-may-catch-a-break-in-oregon\/","title":{"rendered":"Veterans May Catch a Break in Oregon"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 0 5px 5px;float:right;height:100px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/veterans-may-catch-a-break-in-oregon\/\" send=\"true\" layout=\"standard\" width=\"450\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div><p><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"251\" height=\"200\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marijuana.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/veterans.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"veterans\" title=\"veterans\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-19716\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marijuana.net\/news-and-articles\/veterans-may-catch-a-break-in-oregon\/attachment\/veterans\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-19716\" title=\"veterans\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marijuana.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/veterans-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>As the 2012 presidential election nears, we will hear two men in suits talking quite a bit about our soldiers.\u00a0 They will congratulate and praise them, but they will also ignore their basic needs. \u00a0Returning home after enduring the daily struggles of a foreign military conflict is not an envious position.\u00a0 Our government has a responsibility to help who protect our country.\u00a0 Integrating back into civilian life has proven difficult for many soldiers and with cuts to veteran hospitals and benefits the future does not appear to hold an easier path.<\/p>\n<p>Of course there is an affordable and accessible plan by many to help our soldiers.\u00a0 Instead of addicting prescription pills that ultimately prove less effective, medical marijuana has been crucial to many returning soldiers.\u00a0 If we are unwilling to tax, regulate, and stimulate the economy with our antiquated marijuana laws, then of course we would be willing to make an exception for those who ensure our own comfortable lives.\u00a0 That assumption could not be further from the truth as many states, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/military\/story\/2012-07-18\/veterans-marijuana-white-house\/56307972\/1\" target=\"_blank\">The White House have ignored <\/a>the pleas of veteran organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Recently we did learn there was hope for those soldiers living in Oregon.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/health\/index.ssf\/2012\/08\/oregon_medical_marijuana_backe.html\" target=\"_blank\">Oregonlive.com<\/a> published an article that describes the efforts of veteran groups and activists seeking to add <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmedhealth\/PMH0001923\/\" target=\"_blank\">PTSD<\/a> to list of conditions that qualify for medical marijuana use.\u00a0 The article describes the situations of several struggling veterans including Jared Townsend.\u00a0 Mr. Townsend is an Iraq war veteran and recently said that cannabis use can &#8220;balance life out a little bit better.&#8221;\u00a0 He also went on to say &#8220;If I get racing thoughts and real worked up, it can break a panic attack pretty quick.&#8221;\u00a0 While there is considerable momentum for attempting to change the law, precedent is not encouraging.\u00a0 In the 14 years of Oregon\u2019s medical marijuana program only new condition (agitation associated with Alzheimer\u2019s disease) has been added to the list of permissible uses. \u00a0\u00a0In order to get the law changed, a petition will have to be submitted.\u00a0 Then the <a href=\"http:\/\/cms.oregon.gov\/oha\/pages\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Oregon Health Authority<\/a> will select who sits on a panel to review the submission.\u00a0 Veteran and marijuana advocates claim that past panels have included many anti marijuana members.<\/p>\n<p>Research is still not conclusive on just how effective cannabis is toward treating complications associated with PTSD.\u00a0 Dr. John J.
