{"id":6961,"date":"2016-11-09T06:14:01","date_gmt":"2016-11-09T06:14:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/?p=2215301"},"modified":"2016-11-09T06:14:01","modified_gmt":"2016-11-09T06:14:01","slug":"marijuana-measures-trending-favorably-in-u-s-states","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/marijuana-measures-trending-favorably-in-u-s-states\/","title":{"rendered":"Marijuana measures trending favorably in U.S. states"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 0 5px 5px;float:right;height:100px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/marijuana-measures-trending-favorably-in-u-s-states\/\" send=\"true\" layout=\"standard\" width=\"450\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div><p>Tuesday night shaped\u00a0up to be the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2016\/08\/23\/california-marijuana-market-report\/61494\/\">\u201cwatershed\u201d moment<\/a>\u00a0predicted for the marijuana industry.<\/p>\n<p>Voters in five states \u2014 Arizona, California, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada \u2014 were deciding whether to legalize the recreational use of cannabis; and residents in four other states \u2014 Arkansas, Florida, Montana and North Dakota \u2014 were weighing medical marijuana measures.<\/p>\n<p>By 10:15 p.m.,\u00a0the vast majority of those measures were headed to passage, notably California\u2019s Proposition 64, which would legalize sales of marijuana for recreational use in the nation\u2019s most-populous state.\u00a0The Associated Press called the race in favor of Proposition 64, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2016\/08\/23\/california-marijuana-market-report\/61494\/\">has been viewed as a linchpin for marijuana legalization<\/a>. The measure was ahead with 1,951,538 votes for, or 56 percent, to 1,528,434 votes against, or 44 percent, with 19.7 percent of precincts reporting.<\/p>\n<p>Massachusetts\u2019 recreational measure also passed, according to The Associated Press, as the state became the first on the East Coast to legalize adult use of marijuana with 53 percent in favor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2016\/11\/08\/florida-medical-marijuana-results-amendment-2-election-2016\/66816\/\">Florida was the first to turn green<\/a>, with medical marijuana Amendment 2 garnering more than 71 percent of the vote.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2016\/11\/08\/north-dakota-medical-marijuana-vote-measure-5-election-2016\/66822\/\">North Dakota appeared to be second<\/a>, with more than 64 percent of voters favoring medical marijuana statutory measure No. 5, with 74 percent of precincts reporting.<\/p>\n<p>By 10:15 p.m. MST, Arkansas\u2019 medical marijuana measure was leading, 52 percent, or 458,886 votes for, to 48 percent, or 421,958 votes against, with 68 percent of precincts reporting.<\/p>\n<p>In Maine, with 57 percent of precincts reporting, the recreational marijuana measure had a narrow lead \u2014 51 percent, or 224,729 votes, to 49 percent, or 215,744 votes, according to The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>Massachusetts\u2019 recreational measure was close, with 52 percent in favor \u2014 405,525\u00a0votes for and 370,943\u00a0votes against \u2014 with 22 percent of the state\u2019s precincts reporting, according to AP.<\/p>\n<p>With 14 percent of the precincts reporting in Nevada, the Silver State\u2019s recreational measure was leading with 417,111 votes for, or 53 percent, to 363,815 votes against, or 47 percent.<\/p>\n<p>In Montana, with 5.8 percent of precincts reporting, the measure to expand the state\u2019s medical marijuana laws was ahead with 121,674 votes for, or 57 percent, to 90,833 votes against, or 42 percent.<\/p>\n<p>However, it didn\u2019t appear that it would be a clean sweep for marijuana legalization efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/tag\/proposition-205\/\">heavily contested Proposition 205<\/a>\u00a0was down, with 832,004 votes against, or 53 percent, and 745,382 votes in favor, or 47 percent, with 52 percent of precincts reporting.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2016\/11\/04\/cannabis-ballot-box-marijuana-legalization-critical-mass\/66764\/\">Marijuana policy experts have said that the more states adopting marijuana laws<\/a> \u2014 especially the economic force of the populous California \u2014 could push the needle a little further in the direction of broad-scale federal legalization. Prior to Tuesday, half of the U.S. states had medical marijuana laws in place and a few others \u2014 Colorado, Alaska, Oregon, Washington and Washington, D.C. \u2014 had legalized the recreational use of marijuana.<\/p>\n<p>Federal legalization likely won\u2019t happen with a flip of the switch, experts have said, but the increased adoption of these laws could spur increased dialogue on banking- and tax-related issues that have dogged the industry.<\/p>\n<p>The two leading presidential candidates have said they support marijuana legalization from a states\u2019 rights perspective. Democrat Hillary Clinton committed to rescheduling marijuana to Schedule II, and Republican Donald Trump appeared to be hands-off on this topic.
