{"id":7055,"date":"2016-12-13T19:51:02","date_gmt":"2016-12-13T19:51:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/?p=2279987"},"modified":"2016-12-13T19:51:02","modified_gmt":"2016-12-13T19:51:02","slug":"colorado-researchers-receive-2-35m-to-study-marijuana-use-on-driving-other-impacts-of-legalization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/colorado-researchers-receive-2-35m-to-study-marijuana-use-on-driving-other-impacts-of-legalization\/","title":{"rendered":"Colorado researchers receive $2.35M to study marijuana use on driving, other impacts of legalization"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 0 5px 5px;float:right;height:100px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/colorado-researchers-receive-2-35m-to-study-marijuana-use-on-driving-other-impacts-of-legalization\/\" send=\"true\" layout=\"standard\" width=\"450\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div><p>In a groundbreaking effort to better understand what, exactly, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2016\/04\/18\/fewer-coloradans-seek-treatment-for-pot-use-but-heavier-use-seen\/\">happened<\/a> after voters legalized recreational marijuana in Colorado, the state\u2019s Health Department on Tuesday announced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0ByonCYTyaB73MjZKeDBVWFdIZUk\/view\">$2.35 million in grants<\/a> to researchers who will help answer that\u00a0question.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the money \u2014 $1.68 million \u2014 will go toward two studies that look at the impacts of marijuana use on driving. The first will compare driving impairment for heavy marijuana consumers versus\u00a0occasional consumers. The other will study <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2015\/06\/25\/dabbing-concentrates-misunderstood\/36832\/\">dabbing<\/a> \u2014 the smoking of highly potent marijuana extracts \u2014 to determine its effects on driving and cognitive functioning.<\/p>\n<p>Other studies receiving grant funding will look at how long marijuana stays in the breast milk of nursing mothers, the adverse effects of edible cannabis products, the cardiovascular risks of marijuana use in people with heart problems, the impact of marijuana use on older adults and, lastly, an \u201canalysis of data from before and after implementation of recreational marijuana in Colorado,\u201d by a psychology professor\u00a0specializing in addiction counseling at Colorado State University.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"related right\" \/>\n<p>\u201cThis research will be invaluable in Colorado and across the country,\u201d Dr. Larry Wolk, the executive director of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, said in a statement. \u201cThe findings will inform our public education efforts and give people additional information they need to make decisions about marijuana use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Health Department <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2014\/06\/11\/colorado-preparing-to-spend-9-million-on-medical-marijuana-research\/\">previously spent $9 million<\/a> as part of a historic effort to fund the study of medical marijuana by a state government. Those research projects are still ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the state legislature <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2016\/06\/30\/marijuana-research-grants-colorado-health\/\">approved funding for the new grants<\/a> to study recreational marijuana.
