{"id":7076,"date":"2016-12-26T19:29:23","date_gmt":"2016-12-26T19:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.420magazine.com\/?p=5598"},"modified":"2016-12-26T19:29:23","modified_gmt":"2016-12-26T19:29:23","slug":"nsw-medicinal-cannabis-trial-for-cancer-patients-to-start-at-calvary-mater-hospital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/nsw-medicinal-cannabis-trial-for-cancer-patients-to-start-at-calvary-mater-hospital\/","title":{"rendered":"NSW: Medicinal Cannabis Trial For Cancer Patients To Start At Calvary Mater Hospital"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 0 5px 5px;float:right;height:100px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/nsw-medicinal-cannabis-trial-for-cancer-patients-to-start-at-calvary-mater-hospital\/\" send=\"true\" layout=\"standard\" width=\"450\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div><p>Newcastle&#8217;s Calvary Mater Hospital will be involved in a world-first clinical trial into the effects of medicinal cannabis on the appetites of cancer patients.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers are now recruiting palliative care cancer patients in Sydney and Newcastle for the trial of vapourised cannabis flower buds.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Richard Chye, director of the Sacred Heart Palliative Care Service at St Vincent\u2019s Hospital Sydney, said they were seeking 30 trial participants with advanced cancer who had lost their appetite.<\/p>\n<p>The first stage of the \u201cvery complex\u201d trial was due to begin in January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of the trials around use a combination of CBD and THC, which is only two molecules of the 200-odd found in cannabis,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first trial I am aware of that uses raw cannabis, rather than an extract, and therefore will test a lot more molecules than just the two that everybody knows about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The initial stage of the trial would help researchers at St Vincent\u2019s and Calvary Mater Hospitals begin to understand the logistics of using vapourised cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will help us to work out how to use it, how often it should be used, and what dose should be used,\u201d Professor Chye said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis trial will help us better understand the drug, and the side effects to be expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Chye said when cancer patients lost their appetite, they lost weight and muscle mass.<\/p>\n<p>With that came a loss of vitality and energy.<\/p>\n<p>If this clinical trial could help researchers identify a way to improve appetite and nutrition, and reduce weight loss, cancer patients would have a better quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they don\u2019t have the same strength as before, it makes it difficult for them to enjoy life,\u201d Professor Chye said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut more importantly, it makes it difficult for them to tolerate the side effects of treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited because we are at the leading edge of this type of research, it has never been done before and we\u2019re excited to start the journey towards answering those questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <img src=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/nsw-medicinal-cannabis-trial-for-cancer-patients-to-start-at-calvary-mater-hospital.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\"> <\/p>\n<p>News Moderator: Katelyn Baker <a href=\"http:\/\/www.420magazine.com\" target=\"_blank\">420 MAGAZINE \u00ae<\/a><br \/>\nFull Article: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theherald.com.au\/story\/4372636\/cancer-cases-sought-for-clinical-trials\/\" target=\"_blank\">Medicinal Cannabis Trial For Cancer Patients To Start At Calvary Mater Hospital In Newcastle<\/a><br \/>\nAuthor: Anita Beaumont<br \/>\nContact: 02 4979 5000<br \/>\nPhoto Credit: Steve Bloom<br \/>\nWebsite: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theherald.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Newcastle Herald<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Newcastle&#8217;s Calvary Mater Hospital will be involved in a world-first clinical trial into the effects of medicinal cannabis on the&#8230;
