{"id":7201,"date":"2017-02-07T21:09:13","date_gmt":"2017-02-07T21:09:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com?p=2424433&amp;preview_id=2424433"},"modified":"2017-02-07T21:09:13","modified_gmt":"2017-02-07T21:09:13","slug":"colorado-puts-new-focus-on-worker-safety-in-cannabis-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/colorado-puts-new-focus-on-worker-safety-in-cannabis-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Colorado puts new focus on worker safety in cannabis industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 0 5px 5px;float:right;height:100px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/colorado-puts-new-focus-on-worker-safety-in-cannabis-industry\/\" send=\"true\" layout=\"standard\" width=\"450\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div><div class=\"row\" id=\"sticky-outer\">\n<div class=\"large-11 small-12 columns\">\n<div class=\"entry-meta-date\">Published: Feb 7, 2017, 1:05 pm \u2022 Updated: Feb 7, 2017, 1:19 pm<span class=\"single-comments-link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2017\/02\/07\/colorado-marijuana-safety-jobs-workplace\/73208\/#disqus_thread\" class=\"commentsNameLink\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"byline\">By <span class=\"author\"><a class=\"url fn n\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/author\/awallace\/\" rel=\"author\">Alicia Wallace<\/a><\/span><em>, The Cannabist Staff<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Colorado health officials have issued a set of guiding principles for marijuana businesses to address\u00a0occupational health and hazards.<\/p>\n<p>Workers in the cannabis industry, including budtenders, extraction technicians, trimmers and cultivators, are key figures in a report released Tuesday by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSlips, trips and falls are hazards common to every industry, but the marijuana industry has special considerations,\u201d Roberta Smith, manager of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.gov\/pacific\/cdphe\" target=\"_blank\">CDPHE\u2019s<\/a> Occupational Health Program, said in a statement. \u201cFor example, fires and explosions can occur during production of marijuana extracts and lead to fatal injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nearly 80-page report identifies potential hazards unique to each job \u2014 including exposure to mold, pesticides, gases and even instances of workplace violence \u2014 and offers employers a set of recommended controls or best work practices in the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.gov\/pacific\/cdphe\/marijuana-occupational-safety-and-health\" target=\"_blank\">Guide to Worker Safety and Health in the Marijuana Industry<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The guide was developed by the Colorado Marijuana Occupational Health and Safety Work Group, a more than 40-member committee with expertise in areas such as public health, safety, regulations and medicine.
