{"id":7216,"date":"2017-02-15T16:13:44","date_gmt":"2017-02-15T16:13:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com?p=2462734&amp;preview_id=2462734"},"modified":"2017-02-15T16:13:44","modified_gmt":"2017-02-15T16:13:44","slug":"document-on-marijuana-health-risks-no-longer-listed-dea-website","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/document-on-marijuana-health-risks-no-longer-listed-dea-website\/","title":{"rendered":"Document on marijuana health risks no longer listed DEA website"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 0 5px 5px;float:right;height:100px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/document-on-marijuana-health-risks-no-longer-listed-dea-website\/\" send=\"true\" layout=\"standard\" width=\"450\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div><div class=\"row\" id=\"sticky-outer\">\n<div class=\"large-11 small-12 columns\">\n<div class=\"entry-meta-date\">Published: Feb 14, 2017, 4:36 pm \u2022 Updated: Feb 14, 2017, 4:36 pm<span class=\"single-comments-link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2017\/02\/14\/dea-website-document-marijuana-health-risks-no-longer-listed\/73626\/#disqus_thread\" class=\"commentsNameLink\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"byline\">By <span class=\"author\"><a class=\"url fn n\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/author\/awallace\/\" rel=\"author\">Alicia Wallace<\/a><\/span><em>, The Cannabist Staff<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A document that put the DEA under fire for disseminating misinformation about marijuana\u2019s health effects has disappeared from the agency\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>As of Monday, \u201cThe Dangers and Consequences of Marijuana Abuse,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20161221020153\/https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/docs\/dangers-consequences-marijuana-abuse.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">nearly 45-page publication<\/a> on the various ramifications of cannabis use, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/docs\/dangers-consequences-marijuana-abuse.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">no longer was available<\/a> on the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/index.shtml\">website<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The document last year <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2016\/12\/15\/dea-health-risks-website\/69504\/\">was at the center of a legal petition by Americans for Safe Access<\/a> claiming the DEA\u2019s publishing of \u201cscientifically inaccurate information about the health effects of medical cannabis\u201d directly influenced \u201cthe action \u2014 and inaction \u2014 of Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In December, the medical marijuana advocacy organization alleged that the DEA website\u2019s inclusion of 25 false statements about marijuana violated the Data Quality Act, also known as the Information Quality Act, which is meant to ensure the quality, objectivity, utility and integrity of information that government agencies provide to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Some of those statements \u2014 that cannabis plays a significant role in psychosis; marijuana smoking causes tumors of the head, neck and lung; and marijuana is a precursor to illicit drug use and heroin addiction \u2014 have been contradicted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2016\/08\/12\/2016-17954\/denial-of-petition-to-initiate-proceedings-to-reschedule-marijuana#p-81.\" target=\"_blank\">DEA\u2019s own statements<\/a> in its August 2016 Denial of Petition to Initiate Proceedings to Reschedule Marijuana, <a href=\"http:\/\/american-safe-access.s3.amazonaws.com\/documents\/DOJ%20IQA%20Petition.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">according to ASA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Agencies have 60 days to respond to requests to correct information, ASA said in its statement.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, the group hailed the document\u2019s absence as a victory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe DEA\u2019s removal of these popular myths about cannabis from their website could mean the end of the Washington gridlock,\u201d Steph Sherer, ASA executive director, said in a statement. \u201cThis is a victory for medical cannabis patients across the nation, who rely on cannabis to treat serious illnesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DEA spokesman Russell Baer, citing pending litigation, told The Cannabist on Tuesday that he could not comment on the matter. <\/p>\n<p>In its statement, ASA said \u201cthe fight is not over,\u201d claiming that the DEA\u2019s website continues to include false or misleading statements about marijuana. <\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-meta-author\">\n<div class=\"authorimage\"><a class=\"url fn n\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/author\/awallace\/\" rel=\"author\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/document-on-marijuana-health-risks-no-longer-listed-dea-website.jpg\" class=\"authormug\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p class=\"author-desc\">Alicia Wallace joined The Cannabist in July 2016, covering national marijuana policy and business.
