The committee was formed following an all-day meeting and vote of 60 stakeholders \u2014 representatives from inside and outside the cannabis industry \u2014 who gathered at ASTM\u2019s headquarters in West Conshohocken, Pa.<\/p>\n<p>If approved by the organization\u2019s\u00a0board of directors, the committee would become one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astm.org\/COMMIT\/alpha.html\" target=\"_blank\">more than 140 standards-writing committees<\/a> at ASTM.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it provides a solid foundation for the industry to develop strong, ethical (standards),\u201d said Jeremy Applen, a consultant with the cannabis industry who focuses on regulations, product quality and product safety.<\/p>\n<p>If established as expected, the cannabis committee could be churning out standards in a matter of months, ASTM officials said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cannabis industry touches different pockets of industry,\u201d said Christine DeJong, ASTM\u2019s director of business development. There\u2019s so much applicability for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new cannabis committee plans to develop standards in the following technical areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Indoor and outdoor horticulture and agriculture<\/li>\n<li>Quality management systems<\/li>\n<li>Laboratory<\/li>\n<li>Processing and handling<\/li>\n<li>Security and transportation<\/li>\n<li>Personnel training, assessment and credentialing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The standards publications for the specific cannabis-related sectors would then join the 12,000 standards ASTM has in its portfolio. Those standards, which range from a couple pages to a couple-hundred pages, are used to develop best-practices and regulations by businesses and governments alike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOther associations work on best-practices and guidance,\u201d but they\u2019re not accredited, DeJong said. \u201cWhat we\u2019re doing is bringing them under the umbrella of the ASTM and try to harmonize those efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-meta-author\">\n<div class=\"authorimage\"><a class=\"url fn n\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/author\/awallace\/\" rel=\"author\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/119-year-old-global-standards-group-wants-to-guide-marijuana-industry.jpg\" class=\"authormug\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p class=\"author-desc\">Alicia Wallace joined The Cannabist in July 2016, covering national marijuana policy and business.
