{"id":754,"date":"2012-09-26T07:04:50","date_gmt":"2012-09-26T07:04:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marijuana.net\/?p=20062"},"modified":"2012-09-26T07:04:50","modified_gmt":"2012-09-26T07:04:50","slug":"marijuana-like-compound-in-brain-shows-fragile-x-syndrome-may-be-treatable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/marijuana-like-compound-in-brain-shows-fragile-x-syndrome-may-be-treatable\/","title":{"rendered":"Marijuana Like Compound in Brain Shows Fragile X Syndrome May Be Treatable"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 0 5px 5px;float:right;height:100px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/marijuana-like-compound-in-brain-shows-fragile-x-syndrome-may-be-treatable\/\" send=\"true\" layout=\"standard\" width=\"450\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div><p><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"347\" height=\"346\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marijuana.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/brain.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"brain\" title=\"brain\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-20066\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marijuana.net\/news-and-articles\/marijuana-like-compound-shows-fragile-x-syndrome-may-be-treated\/attachment\/brain\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-20066\" title=\"brain\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marijuana.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/brain-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The federal government has shown an unwillingness to entertain operational changes.\u00a0 In particular, federal authorities still prefer to suppress the monumental potential of medical marijuana as it is an uncomfortable topic because it may require regulation, rescheduling, and the admission of an almost 100 year mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Medical marijuana breakthroughs are occurring at a frequent rate.\u00a0 Last week alone, <a href=\"www.marijuana.net\" target=\"_blank\">marijuana.net<\/a> reported on a breakthrough that showed cannabis had the potential to fight epilepsy.\u00a0 Perhaps even more groundbreaking was a study that showed components of marijuana had the ability to slow the spreading of cancer cells.\u00a0 Of course this builds on years research that have shown marijuana to be a miracle of sorts, and has demonstrated promise in fighting chronic pain, muscle conditions, MS, complications related to chemotherapy, glaucoma, the spreading of HIV\/AIDS, nausea, PTSD etc (it would take too much time to list them all).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmedhealth\/PMH0002633\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fragile X Syndrome<\/a> now joins the constantly growing list of medical conditions that may benefit from marijuana research.\u00a0 This complex condition is associated with autism and mental retardation in men and considered the most common cause of both.\u00a0 Fragile X syndrome is a mutation of the FMR1 gene in the X chromosome that is passed on by the mother.\u00a0 This mutation can result in mental disability, hyperactivity, physical disability, and language deficiencies.<\/p>\n<p>The main problem has to do with messages and receptors in the brain.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Researchers have now found that 2-AG, a marijuana like compound and endocannabinoid transmitter is showing considerable promise in reducing fragile x syndrome symptoms.\u00a0 Daniele Piomelli, a professor at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uci.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">UC Irvine<\/a> was the lead researcher of the study and recently said \u201cThis compound is so important in regulating neural transmission in the brain that it seemed possible that it might be involved in a disease that is so devastating on brain function.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0When the 2-AG signal is boosted, it appears the brain will relay the correct messages, at least in lab mice.\u00a0 Proffessor Piomelli explained\u00a0 \u201cWe asked, \u2018If we boost a little bit of that 2-AG signal, will it be enough to correct the problems that occur in fragile X mice?
