{"id":7644,"date":"2017-08-10T18:16:19","date_gmt":"2017-08-10T18:16:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.420magazine.com\/?p=6446"},"modified":"2017-08-10T18:16:19","modified_gmt":"2017-08-10T18:16:19","slug":"roger-goodell-talks-marijuana-and-its-potential-in-treating-player-health-in-the-nfl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/roger-goodell-talks-marijuana-and-its-potential-in-treating-player-health-in-the-nfl\/","title":{"rendered":"Roger Goodell Talks Marijuana And Its Potential In Treating Player Health In The NFL"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 0 5px 5px;float:right;height:100px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/roger-goodell-talks-marijuana-and-its-potential-in-treating-player-health-in-the-nfl\/\" send=\"true\" layout=\"standard\" width=\"450\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div><p>NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said marijuana and its potential in treating football-related injuries is \u201ca medical issue\u201d that the league is interested in researching further.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf pain management is something that medical marijuana can address responsibly, that\u2019s something that our medical community is evaluating,\u201d Goodell said Thursday at a forum at the Broncos\u2019 Dove Valley headquarters. \u201cWe just proposed to our union in the last month or so that we put some research money behind that to see how we could implement that \u2026 if they can address pain management in an effective and safe fashion. That\u2019s something that I assume will get a lot of discussion, but hopefully it involves a lot of research and medical opinions that can help us make the best decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The collectively bargained substance-abuse policy bans players from consuming marijuana \u2014 they\u2019re penalized if they test positive for more than 35 nanograms of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) per milliliter of urine \u2014 but many former and current athletes have advocated for the use of cannabinoids as alternative to potent painkillers.<\/p>\n<p>The NFL Players\u2019 Association established a pain management committee to address, among other issues, the use of marijuana as a viable and potentially safer treatment for football-related pain. In past interviews, Goodell has said the league will consider changing the substance abuse policy when research supports doing so.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, the NFL wrote a letter to the NFLPA to work in tandem with the players in cannabis research. According to The Washington Post, the NFL\u2019s letter to the union outlined multiple areas for potential research, including pain management for both acute and chronic conditions.<\/p>\n<p>At Thursday\u2019s forum at Dove Valley, Goodell was asked about studies on head injuries and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. Most recently, researchers at Boston University examined the brains of 202 deceased football players and found that of the 111 that played in the NFL, 110 had CTE, a degenerative disease that is believed to be linked to repeated blows to the head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appreciate the studies and we actually not only appreciate them, we funded a lot of these studies. What we all need is more information,\u201d Goodell said. \u201cThere is one thing that is clear among this medical community, that we have a lot more questions than we have answers. We need more research and I think we have led the way on that front. We\u2019ve not only led with research, but we\u2019ve led with rule changes to our game, we\u2019ve led on awareness to the injuries, we\u2019ve led on how we can develop new equipment that will make our game safer for our players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goodell touted the development of a new helmet that was born out of the league\u2019s health initiative with GE \u2014 the VICIS ZERO1 helmet \u2014 that has garnered an array of positive reviews and skepticism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe put it out that \u2014 how do we use new materials, how do we use new technology to create a better helmet that\u2019s going to absorb the impact?\u201d Goodell said. \u201cAnd we have one that\u2019s hitting the market this year. It was developed by somebody in Seattle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that because of that leadership, because we\u2019ve taken responsibility to really manage the health and safety of our players that is going to be seen as, \u2018Hey, they\u2019re doing the right things.
