Only one database \u2013 the Fatality Analysis Reporting System maintained by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration \u2013 carried the basic information necessary to help identify which crashes were tied to marijuana.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"related right\" \/>\n<p>Though the FARS database pinpoints drivers who test positive for cannabinoids, it does not offer the type of cannabinoid found nor if the drug was a cause of the crash. Names of drivers or passengers also are not available.<\/p>\n<p>The Post obtained public toxicology reports for all fatal crashes from county coroners in the Front-Range area, though not all counties complied with the request readily, and one \u2013 El Paso County \u2013 would only comply at considerable expense.<\/p>\n<p>By linking the dates from those records, the newspaper then collected a variety of reports and investigations of certain crashes to help provide additional details and the names of those behind the incidents.<\/p>\n<p>The Post culled through hundreds of pages of paper and electronic records, documents and publicly available studies, and conducted more than two dozen interviews of crash victims, coroners, law enforcement officers, policy makers and experts from the marijuana industry.<\/p>\n<p>Look to The Post in coming months for more stories on the effects of marijuana legalization in Colorado.<\/p>\n<aside> <\/aside>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"media_block\"><\/div>\n<p>Four years after Colorado voters passed Amendment 64 legalizing the sale of recreational marijuana, The Denver Post is taking a deeper look into the impact the drug has had on the state.
