O\u2019Brien issued a follow-up report to his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2016\/10\/20\/auditor-denver-marijuana-policy-pot-tax-revenue\/\">2016 audit of the Office of Marijuana Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The follow-up audit found the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2016\/10\/31\/denver-marijuana-regulations-ashley-kilroy\/66490\/\">office had increased its outreach efforts<\/a> \u2014 via hosting quarterly check-in meetings, publishing bulletins specific to the marijuana industry and by attending Registered Neighborhood Organization meetings. It also noted improvements in documentation for how the office has tracked and monitored its ongoing efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The agency, however, needs to be more transparent about how marijuana revenues will be spent, according to the auditor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe department is working to improve transparency and outreach efforts,\u201d O\u2019Brien said in a statement accompanying the report. \u201cIt could still improve disclosure around specific planned uses of recreational marijuana tax revenues, to ensure the money is used as many voters wanted when they approved legalization of recreational marijuana.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 budget includes how the approximately $21 million in special sales tax from retail marijuana should be spent: avenues such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2017\/09\/22\/denver-marijuana-management-symposium-2017\/88541\/\">regulation<\/a>, enforcement education and public health efforts around marijuana, as well as\u00a0deferred maintenance projects for transportation, parks and recreation centers.<\/p>\n<p>However, specific programs or efforts were not described in a consistent manner in budget summaries, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, O\u2019Brien found that city marijuana regulators had only partially implemented a recommendation to improve documentation and monitoring progress.<\/p>\n<p>A request for comment from the Office of Marijuana Policy was not immediately returned.<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-meta-author\">\n<div class=\"authorimage\"><a class=\"url fn n\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/author\/awallace\/\" rel=\"author\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/denver-marijuana-regulators-oversight-improved-but-still-lacking-tax-transparency-auditor-says.jpg\" class=\"authormug\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p class=\"author-desc\">Alicia Wallace joined The Cannabist in July 2016, covering national marijuana policy and business.
