It also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2017\/05\/22\/california-marijuana-legalization-previous-conviction-reduced\/79978\/\">allowed people convicted of marijuana charges to petition courts<\/a> to toss out the cases or reduce penalties.<\/p>\n<p>Gascon says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2017\/12\/18\/california-marijuana-convictions-expunge\/94835\/\">that process can be time consuming and costly<\/a>, so prosecutors in the district attorney\u2019s office plan to review and wipe out eligible cases en masse. Some people with convictions may not know they are eligible, Gascon said.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2018\/01\/10\/california-marijuana-convictions-new-laws\/96464\/\">California bill would automatically erase prior marijuana convictions<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u201cA misdemeanor or felony conviction can have significant implications for employment, housing, and other benefits,\u201d Gascon said. He said prosecutors will review cases from 1975 through passage of Proposition 64 in November 2016.<\/p>\n<p>He said 23 petitions for dismissal or reduction have been filed in San Francisco since passage of Proposition 64.<\/p>\n<p>As of September, around 5,000 people had applied for a change to their records, according to state data. That\u2019s a fraction of the people that experts estimate are eligible.<\/p>\n<p>Laura Thomas, deputy state director for the pro-marijuana organization Drug Policy Alliance, estimated more than 100,000 people are eligible to have their records changed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2018\/01\/17\/marijuana-justice-act-booker-lee-khanna\/96979\/\">Rep. Barbara Lee introduces companion House bill to Marijuana Justice Act<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Assemblyman Rob Bonta, a Democrat from Oakland, introduced legislation on Jan. 9 that would require county courts to automatically expunge eligible records.<\/p>\n<p>Recreational marijuana became legal in California last year, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2018\/01\/01\/california-marijuana-legalization-2018\/95667\/\">on Jan. 1 it became legal for licensed dispensaries to sell it<\/a> to non-medical patients.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Justice Department announced at the beginning of January that it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2018\/01\/04\/jeff-sessions-rescinding-legalized-marijuana-policy\/95875\/\">halting an Obama-era policy<\/a> to take a hands-off approach toward states that have legalized marijuana.
