{"id":8147,"date":"2018-03-21T19:16:42","date_gmt":"2018-03-21T19:16:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com?p=2989684&amp;preview_id=2989684"},"modified":"2018-03-21T19:16:42","modified_gmt":"2018-03-21T19:16:42","slug":"cbd-could-soon-be-prescribed-in-colorado-pharmacies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/cbd-could-soon-be-prescribed-in-colorado-pharmacies\/","title":{"rendered":"CBD could soon be prescribed in Colorado pharmacies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 0 5px 5px;float:right;height:100px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/cbd-could-soon-be-prescribed-in-colorado-pharmacies\/\" send=\"true\" layout=\"standard\" width=\"450\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div><div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"large-10 large-centered small-12 columns\">\n<p>Cannabidiol is available in Colorado health food stores, but the state\u2019s marijuana laws prevent the cannabis compound from being sold in pharmacies.<\/p>\n<p>A bill moving through the Statehouse would open the doors for GW Pharmaceuticals\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2017\/11\/03\/cbd-epidiolex-fda-nda-gw-pharmaceuticals-pharmaceutical-drug\/91562\/\">CBD-centric Epidiolex drug<\/a> to be prescribed and sold in pharmacies across the state.<\/p>\n<p>A House committee passed the \u201cFood and Drug Administration Cannabidiol Drug Use\u201d late Tuesday in a 9-0 vote. The unanimous approval\u00a0of House Bill 1187 followed three hours of public comments and debate that saw amendments added to address concerns raised by the hemp and marijuana industries.<\/p>\n<p>The bill\u2019s backers \u2014 Greenwich Biosciences, GW\u2019s U.S. subsidiary \u2014 say the provisions would create a legal pathway for doctors to prescribe Epidiolex to patients if the novel cannabis-derived drug is green-lighted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. That decision that could be announced as early as June, according to the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe in no way intend to limit or affect access to any marijuana, recreational or medical, or any hemp products licensed in Colorado,\u201d GW spokeswoman Jessica Wolfe told the House Public Health Care &amp; Human Services Committee on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The London-based company simply wants a lane for its medicine to be prescribed to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2018\/01\/25\/marijuana-anti-seizure-epidolex-drug-study-gw\/97547\/\"> patients such as children<\/a> with rare epilepsy disorders, Wolfe said.<\/p>\n<p>Members of Colorado\u2019s burgeoning hemp industry said they\u2019re concerned that lawmakers may actually be paving a \u201csuperhighway\u201d for a foreign pharmaceutical company to monopolize the CBD market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake no mistake, this bill is written as an attempt to control the (CBD) industry,\u201d said Luke Johnson, founder of Cloud CO Farms, an Alamosa-based hemp cultivation, processing and CBD extraction company.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson was among members of the Colorado hemp industry at the Statehouse that vocalized concerns and fears at the heart of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/tag\/special-report-cbd-tbd\/\">broader CBD debate<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2017\/10\/06\/cbd-epidiolex-gw-pharmaceuticals-fda-hemp-industry\/89387\/\">Does FDA approval of pharmaceutical CBD hand Big Pharma legal control of the cannabis compound and stymie artisanal producers?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2018\/02\/15\/cbd-hemp-dea-marijuana-extracts-lawsuit-federal-appeals-court\/99168\/\">9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals could soon have its say<\/a> in that national debate \u2014 a panel of federal judges are expected to issue an opinion in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2017\/04\/05\/hemp-lawsuit-federal-court-dea-rule-marijuana-extracts\/76635\/\">Hemp Industries Association\u2019s case<\/a> challenging the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2016\/12\/28\/dea-marihuana-spelling-history\/69651\/\">rule on marijuana extracts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-related right\">\n<h3>Related Articles<\/h3>\n<\/aside>\n<p>That case\u2019s resolution and a ruling on Epidiolex will be decided independent of Colorado legislators\u2019 actions, said Garrett O. Graff, an attorney for Denver-based Hoban Law Group, which is representing the hemp industry in the appeals court case.
