{"id":8150,"date":"2018-03-22T14:25:17","date_gmt":"2018-03-22T14:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/?p=2990087"},"modified":"2018-03-22T14:25:17","modified_gmt":"2018-03-22T14:25:17","slug":"colorado-lawmakers-fall-short-in-effort-to-shield-recreational-marijuana-from-federal-enforcement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/colorado-lawmakers-fall-short-in-effort-to-shield-recreational-marijuana-from-federal-enforcement\/","title":{"rendered":"Colorado lawmakers fall short in effort to shield recreational marijuana from federal enforcement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 0 5px 5px;float:right;height:100px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/colorado-lawmakers-fall-short-in-effort-to-shield-recreational-marijuana-from-federal-enforcement\/\" send=\"true\" layout=\"standard\" width=\"450\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div><p>WASHINGTON \u2014 A $1.3 trillion plan to fund the federal government through the end of September won\u2019t include protections for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2018\/02\/26\/denver-approves-first-social-marijuana-license\/\">recreational marijuana<\/a> industry \u2014 a blow to Colorado lawmakers who tried to add that language to the must-pass bill.<\/p>\n<p>The legislators wanted the measure to include a provision that would prohibit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2018\/02\/07\/cory-gardner-marijuana-fight-jeff-sessions\/\">U.S. Department of Justice<\/a> from spending money to crack down on recreational use in states that had legalized the drug.<\/p>\n<p>Congress has protected medical marijuana this way for the past several years \u2014 and did so again in the 2,232-page spending bill \u2014 but several Colorado lawmakers wanted to broaden that shield after U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions in January <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2018\/01\/04\/jeff-sessions-marijuana-colorado-firestorm\/\">rescinded an Obama-era policy<\/a> that generally left alone states such as Colorado that had legalized marijuana.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Sens. Michael Bennet and Cory Gardner of Colorado were among 18 senators who wrote to the Senate Committee on Appropriations in February with the request that its members \u201crespect states\u2019 laws regarding the regulation of marijuana.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2813731\" class=\"wp-caption alignright size-article_inline_half\"><img class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/colorado-lawmakers-fall-short-in-effort-to-shield-recreational-marijuana-from-federal-enforcement\" alt=\"U.S. Sens. Michael Bennet (left) and Cory Gardner of Colorado pushed for recreational marijuana industry protections in the federal budget.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt is our hope that the fiscal year 2018 appropriations will alleviate the turbulence the attorney general\u2019s abrupt decision has caused and that the appropriations will help preserve the strong regulatory frameworks the states have created,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p>But the push to extend congressional protection to recreational marijuana \u2014 also supported by Colorado lawmakers such as U.S. Reps.
