{"id":8280,"date":"2018-05-18T03:06:12","date_gmt":"2018-05-18T03:06:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.420magazine.com\/?p=18636"},"modified":"2018-05-18T03:06:12","modified_gmt":"2018-05-18T03:06:12","slug":"ahead-of-marijuana-legalization-entrepreneurs-see-all-sorts-of-opportunities-in-vermont","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/ahead-of-marijuana-legalization-entrepreneurs-see-all-sorts-of-opportunities-in-vermont\/","title":{"rendered":"Ahead Of Marijuana Legalization, Entrepreneurs See All Sorts Of Opportunities In Vermont"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 0 5px 5px;float:right;height:100px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/ahead-of-marijuana-legalization-entrepreneurs-see-all-sorts-of-opportunities-in-vermont\/\" send=\"true\" layout=\"standard\" width=\"450\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div><p>Vermont&#8217;s marijuana legalization law doesn&#8217;t create a market to sell it, but that hasn&#8217;t stopped people from finding ways to capitalize on legal cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, around 1,500 people attended a <a href=\"https:\/\/headyvermont.com\/events\/vtcann2018\/\">cannabis and hemp convention<\/a> in South Burlington.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees could listen to talks that ranged from tips on how to grow cannabis to best practices for marketing a cannabis business. There were also over 50 businesses at the conference, many from Vermont, <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.vpr.net\/post\/legalization-horizon-vermont-cannabis-entrepreneurs-bullish-future#stream\/0\">that were already in the industry<\/a> or looking to break in.<\/p>\n<p>Despite never attending a cannabis convention before, some things \u2014 like the person dressed up in a bong costume, 420 jokes and reggae music \u2014 were not surprising.<\/p>\n<p>But at first glance, some of the companies that were there were a little unexpected \u2014 such as Vermont Security.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;We do alarm, video and automation, and we&#8217;re looking to get into this space and support this industry.&#8221; \u2014 Jesse Harper, Vermont Security<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe do alarm, video and automation, and we\u2019re looking to get into this space and support this industry,\u201d said Jesse Harper, who was sitting at the company\u2019s table in the exhibition hall.<\/p>\n<p>Harper said once people can start growing marijuana at home, they\u2019ll want to secure their plants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want to have a monitored product and if you\u2019re complying with all the laws, then there\u2019s no reason that you wouldn\u2019t want the police to come and, you know, protect your property,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/digital.vpr.net\/post\/effective-july-1-you-can-legally-have-ounce-marijuana-vermont#stream\/2\">On July 1, adults age 21 years and older will be able to possess, cultivate and consume marijuana in Vermont<\/a>, but not sell it. However, businesses like Vermont Security see an opportunity to expand to a new market \u2014 and they\u2019re not the only ones.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;People can take what they already know and apply it to cannabis \u2014 so I say go with your strengths.&#8221; \u2014 Monica Donovan, Heady Vermont CEO<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Amid the hemp growers and CBD products, were other businesses you might expect at any trade show \u2014 like a cybersecurity company, a marketing company, even a real estate agent. The only difference here was they were focused on cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>Heady Vermont, a cannabis advocacy organization, was one of the organizers of the convention. CEO Monica Donovan said legalization opens up a lot of business opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be growing, it can be an ancillary business,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can do, you know, IT [information technology], you can do apps, you can provide grow supplies \u2026 So people can take what they already know and apply it to cannabis \u2014 so I say go with your strengths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donovan said she&#8217;s expecting a lot of people will be trying to <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.vpr.net\/post\/seeds-flowers-what-vermonters-will-need-know-about-legally-growing-marijuana#stream\/2\">grow their own pot<\/a> \u2014 and because a lot of these people haven&#8217;t tried growing before, entrepreneur Jessilyn Dolan sees an opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Dolan and her partner started HomeGrown Consulting to help people grow recreational and medicinal cannabis. They also have another consulting company to help <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.vpr.net\/post\/vermonts-third-year-industrial-hemp-growth-and-growing-pains#stream\/2\">farmers grow hemp<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re basically wanting to set people up to help them grow, from seed to finish,\u201d Dolan said. \u201cWhether they need help building out their room, setting it up &#8230; and then all the way to the end, if someone wants to make their own butter or make their own salve or what they want to do with their product.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But besides helping people grow or protect their cannabis \u2014 where else might the industry go?<\/p>\n<p>According to Timothy Fair, a lawyer specializing in cannabis law, there\u2019s a lot of room for creativity.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Things like cannabis tourism, cannabis biking tours, cannabis hiking tours, cannabis bed-and-breakfasts &#8230; These are the types of things where you can incorporate cannabis into pre-existing business models with a lot of success.&#8221; \u2014 Lawyer Timothy Fair, Vermont Cannabis Solutions<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBecause of the lack of regulations we\u2019re seeing yet, things like cannabis tourism, cannabis biking tours, cannabis hiking tours, cannabis bed-and-breakfasts \u2026 These are the types of things where you can incorporate cannabis into pre-existing business models with a lot of success,\u201d Fair said.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Vermont won\u2019t have a regulated market for selling recreational marijuana, Fair said he\u2019s heard from two potential clients who want to start businesses that offer &#8220;free gifts&#8221; of cannabis when you buy another product.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019ve told both those potential clients that they\u2019re likely be test cases \u2026 and that if they want to do this, they need to be ready that they could very well be prosecuted,&#8221; Fair said. &#8220;Convicted, that\u2019s a whole different story,\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Vermont has a great niche, has a great name, has that brand-respected status. And I think we can and will be the leaders on the East Coast.&#8221; \u2014 Jessilyn Dolan, HomeGrown Consulting<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Like pretty much everyone at the convention, Fair is excited about the potential in Vermont\u2019s cannabis industry.
