John Hickenlooper this week signed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2018\/04\/24\/cbd-epidiolex-colorado-bill-pass-senate\/104231\/\">House Bill 1187<\/a>, which allows for doctors to prescribe and pharmacies to dispense FDA-approved medicines that contain cannabidiol, a nonpsychoactive cannabis plant compound.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2018\/03\/21\/cbd-colorado-pharmacy\/101793\/\">impetus for the bill<\/a> was Epidiolex, a CBD-centric drug for rare seizure disorders. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2017\/11\/03\/cbd-epidiolex-fda-nda-gw-pharmaceuticals-pharmaceutical-drug\/91562\/\">London-based GW Pharmaceuticals<\/a>, via its U.S. subsidiary Greenwich Biosciences, developed Epidiolex utilizing plant-derived cannabis compounds but hit roadblocks on the state level because of marijuana\u2019s Schedule I designation.<\/p>\n<p>In Colorado, the bill signed Monday sought to address a state statute that prevented pharmacies from dispensing cannabis products.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is expected to issue a decision on Epidiolex\u2019s new drug application by the end of this month. In April, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2018\/04\/18\/gw-pharmaceuticals-epidiolex-cbd-justin-grover\/103667\/\">FDA advisory committee<\/a> gave a unanimous recommendation for approval.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"related right\" \/>\n<p>Members of the hemp and marijuana industries have expressed concerns that Epdiolex\u2019s approval could ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecannabist.co\/2018\/04\/18\/gw-pharmaceuticals-epidiolex-cbd-justin-grover\/103667\/\">harm the emerging CBD extracts industry<\/a>.
