Cory Gardner, R-Colorado, made a move Monday toward changing federal marijuana law, including letting banks accept money from legal businesses.<\/p>\n<p>The Yuma Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2018\/12\/14\/cory-gardner-marijuana-banking\/\">introduced an amendment<\/a> to the First Step Act, a criminal justice reform bill that\u2019s expected to pass the Senate this week with bipartisan support.<\/p>\n<p>Gardner\u2019s amendment would amend the Controlled Substances Act to exempt people growing, selling and buying marijuana from federal prosecution in states where it\u2019s legal. However, the amendment wouldn\u2019t change marijuana\u2019s classification as a Schedule I drug, meaning it would remain illegal in states that haven\u2019t legalized it for medical or recreational use. The amendment would also let federally insured banks accept money from marijuana businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we are debating\u00a0criminal justice reform,\u00a0we need to address the threat of prosecution by the federal government for people in Colorado that are operating legal businesses under state law,\u201d Gardner said in a statement. \u201cRecent polls show around 65 percent of the country support legalization and 93 percent support medical marijuana. The people are speaking. The states are leading.\u00a0It\u2019s time\u00a0for\u00a0Congress to\u00a0act to\u00a0protect states\u2019 rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"related right\" \/>\n<p>Submitting the amendment doesn\u2019t guarantee a vote on it by the full Senate. There are a few procedural hurdles Gardner has to clear first. If he\u2019s successful, a vote on attaching the amendment to the criminal justice bill could happen as early as Tuesday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"media_block\"><\/div>\n<p>Sen.
