{"id":9084,"date":"2020-02-18T20:14:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-18T20:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/?p=3943640"},"modified":"2020-02-18T20:14:00","modified_gmt":"2020-02-18T20:14:00","slug":"colorado-marijuana-sales-hit-a-record-1-75-billion-in-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/colorado-marijuana-sales-hit-a-record-1-75-billion-in-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Colorado marijuana sales hit a record $1.75 billion in 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 0 5px 5px;float:right;height:100px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/colorado-marijuana-sales-hit-a-record-1-75-billion-in-2019\/\" send=\"true\" layout=\"standard\" width=\"450\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div><div class=\"media_block\"><\/div>\n<div><img src=\"https:\/\/cannitrol.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/colorado-marijuana-sales-hit-a-record-1-75-billion-in-2019.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" \/><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2020\/02\/18\/colorado-marijuana-sales-2019\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+dp-news-marijuana+%28Denver+Post%3A+News%3A+Marijuana%29&amp;utm_content=Google+UK#comments-anchor\"><span class=\"spot-im-replies-count\" data-post-id=\"3943640\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last year was the most lucrative 12 months for cannabis sales in Colorado since the state\u2019s voters legalized recreational marijuana.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.gov\/pacific\/sites\/default\/files\/1219_MJSalesCalendarReport_PUBLISH.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Medical and recreational cannabis sales<\/a> hit a record $1.75 billion in 2019, up 13% from 2018, according to data from the Department of Revenue\u2019s Marijuana Enforcement Division. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.gov\/pacific\/sites\/default\/files\/0120_MJTaxCalendarReport_PUBLISH.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marijuana tax collections<\/a> also hit an all-time high, at more than $302 million in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>December closed out the year with strong sales totaling more than $144 million, up 6.7% compared to the previous year. But that wasn\u2019t the biggest month of 2019; instead, August topped the calendar year with $173 million in sales.<\/p>\n<p>All told, Colorado marijuana sales now have hit $7.79 billion since recreational sales began in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Truman Bradley, the newly appointed executive director of the Marijuana Industry Group, said the revenue increases in Colorado track with expectations.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"related right\" \/>\n<p>\u201cPeople are moving from the unregulated market to the regulated market,\u201d Bradley said. \u201cAs reefer madness goes away, as the stigmatism of cannabis reduces and people come over to the regulated market, I would expect that trend to continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since January 2014, Colorado\u2019s cannabis industry has generated $1.21 billion in tax revenue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2018\/12\/27\/colorado-marijuana-tax-dollars-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Those taxes are allocated<\/a> to the state\u2019s public education fund, which covers initiatives such as the Colorado Department of Education\u2019s Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) fund; the state general fund, which covers agencies\u2019 expenses; and the marijuana tax fund, which benefits programs related to substances abuse and treatment, health research, youth education and more.
