He derived the term from the Greek word <em>psykh?<\/em>, meaning \u201cmind,\u201d and <em>d?loun<\/em>, meaning \u201cshow.\u201d It\u2019s been widely interpreted to mean \u201cmind manifesting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coloradans have likely heard much about psychedelics in the last year since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2022\/12\/04\/legal-psilocybin-therapy-oregon-colorado-regulations\/\">voters chose to legalize and decriminalize certain drugs<\/a> at the ballot box in November 2022.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2023\/04\/20\/colorado-psilocybin-bill-implentation-steve-fenberg\/\">The Natural Medicine Health Act<\/a> legalized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/tag\/psilocybin\/\">psilocybin<\/a> and psilocin, which are compounds found in \u201cmagic mushrooms,\u201d for use in therapeutic settings. Bolstered by new research that suggests psychedelics can be effective tools to treat mental health, the measure paved the way for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2023\/09\/03\/psilocybin-mushroom-psychedelic-therapy-colorado-oregon\/\">so-called \u201chealing centers\u201d<\/a> where locals aged 21 and up will soon be able to have a journey under the supervision of a licensed professional.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"related right\"> <\/aside>\n<p>The newly minted law also removed criminal penalties for the personal possession, use, cultivation and sharing of psilocybin and psilocin, as well as ibogaine, mescaline, and DMT.<\/p>\n<p>While Colorado regulators figure out exactly how to roll out a brand-new industry around psychedelic-assisted therapy \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/dpo.colorado.gov\/NaturalMedicine\">the latest board meeting takes place Oct. 20<\/a> \u2014 it\u2019s worth noting that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2023\/08\/31\/psychedelic-therapy-psilocybin-ptsd-cancer-cluster-headaches-colorado\/\">experimentation has long been happening underground<\/a> as a growing number of Americans have sought to improve their mental health.<\/p>\n<p>For thousands of years prior, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2023\/08\/28\/indigenous-protest-colorado-psychedlic-law\/\">indigenous cultures have also used substances<\/a> like psilocybin and peyote for spiritual and religious ceremonies.<\/p>\n<p>As research in the space continues to be conducted and published, more states in the U.S. are considering following in the footsteps of Colorado and Oregon where psilocybin is now legal.<\/p>\n<p>The Denver Post will continue to cover developments in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/tag\/psychedelic\/\">psychedelics policy, science and culture<\/a> to keep locals informed about the emerging sector.
