Man who shot 55-year-old and held a gun to his 80-year-old mother’s head sentenced to 44 years in prison
A 36-year-old man was sentenced to 44 years in prison Thursday after he was found guilty of murdering a man and pointing a gun at the man’s elderly mother during a home invasion.
Ronnie Williams and Corey Carroll, 25, broke into an Adams County home in early December 2016 as Steven Kent, 55, and Marilyn Kent, 80, were in their beds for the night, according to a statement from the Adams County District Attorney’s Office.
The attorney’s office said Williams shot Steven Kent while he was asleep.
But a close family member, who asked not to be identified, said there was more to the story. Williams went into Kent’s room and shot him four times. At this point, the two went into the room across the hall that contained Marilyn Kent, who is disabled and was on oxygen at the time. Kent had been taking care of his mother for 20 years, the family member said.
Williams held a gun to her head but Carroll convinced him not to shoot her, according to the DA’s office.
During this time, the family member said Steven Kent got a hold of his gun and shot Carroll in the lower back as he left Marilyn Kent’s room. Williams shot Steven Kent two more times. The family member said Carroll then crawled out of the house and was later found by authorities in a ditch out back.
The District Attorney’s office said the Williams and Carroll, who wore ski masks and rubber gloves, had left with two freezer bags of marijuana. But the family member said Carroll had dropped the bags when he was shot. They were arrested later in the month.
Williams pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in a plea agreement calling for a sentence of 30 to 44 years, according to the DA’s office.
Carroll pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery. His sentencing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 8 in Division Q of the Adams County District Court.
