Vermont Decriminalizes Marijuana Possession

Vermont is just about the 17th condition to eliminate criminal penalties for that having small quantities of marijuana. Gov. Peter Shumlin signed a stride into law Thursday. The law replaces criminal penalties with civil fines much like a traffic ticket for possession as high as an oz of marijuana or five grams of hashish. The law also goodies having such levels of marijuana by people under age 21 just like underage having alcohol, including referral to the court diversion for any first offense, potential civil penalties and/or license suspension, and criminal penalties for any third breach.

Formerly, possession as high as 2 oz . of marijuana was punishable with a six- to 24-month jail term. Vermont legalized using medicinal marijuana in 2004.
