Pittsburgh City Council Passes Marijuana Decriminalization

Creating a little more elbowroom for The Steel City’s real criminals, the Pittsburgh City Council decisively approved legislation on Monday that will decriminalize the possession of less than 30 grams of marijuana.

Whether it was the Holiday sprit or fiscal concerns, Council members closed out the 2015 legislative session on an elevated note, also approving the decriminalization of up to 8 grams of hash with it’s 7 to 2 vote.

Calling it “a common-sense change that will help protect the futures of young people,” a spokesperson for Mayor Bill Peduto has vowed the Mayor will sign the new bill.

According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, individuals busted with less than 30 grams of pot, or up to 8 grams of hashish, will be issued a fine of no more than $100.

Now, rather than being arrested and put in jail over a minor possession charge, as the law currently stipulates, those caught with a small amount of marijuana will simply be given a modest fine. For those minors caught with less than 30 grams of weed, parents or guardians will be notified of the offense and will be required to pay the fine.
