The Colorado Cannabis Cup is looking for judges; here’s how to be one

Have you ever dreamed of judging a cannabis competition? Good news: You’re high-ered!

The High Times Cannabis Cup has returned to Colorado and is currently seeking judges to try locally-made products, including flower, topicals, edibles and concentrates and help determine the best of their kind available in the Centennial State. (See the full list of categories below.)

Entries into The Cannabis Cup, started in Amsterdam in 1988, were traditionally judged by panels of experts, but in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, “High Times” reshaped the event into a virtual format and opened judging to the general public. It’s now billed as a “People’s Choice” competition and anyone 21 years or older is eligible to judge. In addition to Colorado, competitions are also taking place in Michigan, Illinois, California, and Alaska.

Judging is not limited to longtime consumers and no prior competition experience is necessary. All you need to do is stop by one of High Times partner dispensaries and purchase a judging kit in one of 12 categories. Or heck, purchase and judge in multiple categories if you’re so inclined.

Kits, which went on sale June 5, range $80 to $220 depending on the category and include a wide variety of samples. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so call ahead to ensure the dispensary you plan to visit still has some in stock.

Guidance on how to score your products is included in each kit, and don’t feel the need to sample everything at once. The judging period runs June 5 through Aug. 7. Winners will be announced in mid- to late-August.

So what are you waiting for? Judging kits are available at Rocky Mountain High dispensaries in Denver and Durango, Star Buds locations in Pueblo and Boulder, Emerald Fields in Glendale, and Tumbleweed dispensaries in Carbondale, Craig, DeBeque, Eagle, Edwards, Frisco, Parachute and Steamboat Springs.
