Marijuana Might not be on Trial in Trayvon Martin Situation

courtroom

The incident including the dying of teen Trayvon Martin by the hands if George Zimmerman has sent shock waves through Florida and also the entire country.  First off,  no matter who had been “right” or “wrong”, and no matter what goes on in the trial ,  a youthful guy is no more here around and 2 families may not be exactly the same.

Because the situation plays out we’ve heard a good deal about guns laws and regulations,  self defense,  standing your ground, and racial profiling.  However,  at least for the moment,  we won’t be listening to marijuana use.  Judge Debra Nelson ruled that Trayvon Martin’s supposed marijuana use won’t be allowed within the opening claims.  This signifies a little of the blow to Zimmerman’s attorney, Martin O’Mara who stated “There exists a large amount of evidence that marijuana use had something related to the big event …It might have affected his behavior.”  Judge Nelson, and many people could see it quite in a different way.

An apparent question most request is the reason why exactly will the defense wish to mention the problem.  As marijuana misconceptions are constantly destroyed, the number of people honestly think smoking cannabis would increase the probability of violence? The issue makes less sense when considering that the kind of violence am menacing that Mr. Zimmerman felt he’d no choice but to protect themself if you take Martin’s existence.  In the current age,  where science and shared encounters have overcome the reefer madness era.  For many, it’s not a stretch to  understand that marijuana is much more prone to result in a mellow effect.

The motivations from the defense team appear unclear at best.  As the subject of race isn’t someone to be raised gently,  could the defense team you need to be attempting to conjure negative images of the black youth?  This is identical defense team which desired to include Trayvon Martin’s gold caps (an apparent irrelevant fact)within the opening statement.  Do they realize they might be assisting the prosecutors?

Marijuana continues to be the scapegoat too many occasions.  It is specific by companies, cops,  and our government.  However it rarely signifies the real problems at hands,  and is becoming a simple target.  We are content to determine Judge Nelson using a little more prevalent sense than we have started to expect from the courts.

List of Potential Medical Marijuana States Growing

green cross

As we have been reporting (with regularity), support for medical marijuana is swelling.  Many new states appear to be on the verge of passing laws that would permit the use of medical marijuana.  Currently, there are already 18 states that have passed laws to legalize medical marijuana.

Missouri may be one of the newest states to join the rapidly growing list of medical marijuana states.  The push to reform marijuana laws has moved beyond the the coastal states.  A recent poll suggests that over half of Missouri residents support a physician’s right to prescribe marijuana.  Yahoo.com asks if Missouri could be the next state to legalize medical marijuana, and provides a breakdown of the polling data.

Florida is also another state where the conversation is picking up.  While momentum has been gaining for years in the Sunshine State, it truly seems to have hit a high water mark.  Last week, we at marijuana.net spoke about John Morgan , who has now assumed the role of chairman for activists group People United for Medical Marijuana-Florida He has an incredible track record for raising money (even for  President Barack Obama) and he will likely now take those skills and place tremendous pressure on lawmakers to take action.  Mr. Morgan should have a captive audience as a recent poll showed that 70 percent of  Florida residents support medical marijuana.

It appears that in the near future a majority of states will decide to let residents make their own choices in pain relief.  If Florida or Missouri legalize medical marijuana, then there could be many other previously unexpected states to follow suit.

tom ammiano

Tom Ammiano Back with New California Legalization Bill…

The lack of a statewide system in place to regulate medical marijuana has plagued California since the program’s inception in 1996.  A patchwork of legal fixes have either been implemented or proposed, but no effort, to date, has really solved the issue.  Federal authorities would likely be less motivated to conduct raids if a uniform set of laws was instituted in California.  Other states, such as Colorado have experienced far less problems with organized crime and federal interference due in large part to proper regulation at the state level.  State Assemblyman, Tom Ammiano, is trying to get a bill passed that would set up a state regulated system.  He has attempted this previously, only to find resistance from both law enforcement and activists.  Many accused his proposal of being too vague.  Mr. Ammiano is back with a new proposal and law enforcement is already issuing criticism.  The bill would have marijuana be regulated like alcohol, an idea that is clearly gaining momentum as both Colorado and Washington have passed similar laws.

Marijuana Arrests Cost NYC One Million Police Hours During Mayor Bloomberg’s Tenure as Mayor

New York’s “Stop and Frisk”, a legal loophole used by law enforcement to defeat the spirit of the state’s marijuana decriminalization bill, has been receiving considerable media attention as of late.  Community organizers have been vocal in letting NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly know that they do not support the high arrests for small marijuana possession.  These arrests tend to target Black and Hispanic teens.  Governor Cuomo is trying to get Albany lawmakers to adopt new legislation to put an end to “Stop and Frisk”.  A new statistic will likely embolden the Governor and residents who wish to see their tax dollars put to better use.   According to the Drug Policy Alliance, New York City has spent over one million police hours pursuing marijuana arrests since Michael Bloomberg became mayor (11 years ago).   In a city as vast and populated as New York, residents are getting fed up with the direction law enforcement has taken.  Many neighborhoods are still dangerous and police may be able to utilize their time in a way that would help the city.  The relationship between police and residents has degenerated, due in large part to “Stop and Frisk.”

Police Confiscate Cannon used to Fire Marijuana Across Border Fence…

Many of us have fired a potato cannon at some point in our lives.  Watching a potato fly across a field is one thing, but drug traffickers have taken the idea a bit further.  Recently a homemade cannon had been used to fire bags of marijuana over fences dividing the United States and Mexico.  The cannons have been modified and seem to be a significant improvement over traditional potato cannons. Bags with as much as 30 pounds of marijuana have been travelling up to 500 feet.  This is not the first time cannons have been used.  Mexican authorities claimed to have recovered similar devices over the years.  Authorities have their hands full as this is another example of difficult it has been to try and stop drug smuggling.

Hemp Comeback Could Be in the Works for Kentucky Farmers…

In an age that is increasingly tough on America’s agricultural industry, some good news may be ahead for Kentucky farmers.  Kentucky used to be one of the largest hemp producers before legal changes made its production illegal.  Hemp is now often imported from Canada and lawmakers may seek to bring the industry and its economic benefits back home.  Hemp is known for its versatility and has a wide range of uses including bio-fuels, clothing, paper, lotions, building and composite materials, anti inflammatory medicines, omega-3 supplements, and many other products.  Building support for hemp reform has taken years but state Sen. Joey Pendleton sees a brighter future.  He recently said “We’ve come a long way” and “The first year I had this, it was lonely.”  Many others in the Kentucky legislature have now shown their support and Senator Pendleton said he believed that 2013 would be the year where new laws permitting hemp production will be passed.

Billboard in Colorado Tries to Cultivate Different Image of Marijuana Supporters…

The push for marijuana reform seems to have been slowed, for years, by the negative stereotypes associated with users.  Advocates have fought long and hard to change that perception.  The group from Colorado, Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol have placed their message on a billboard.  The billboard depicts an ordinary woman who says “For many reasons I prefer marijuana over alcohol.  Does that make me a bad person?”  The group has been very active and even organized a successful ballot initiative to place marijuana legalization in the hands of voters.  The billboard is not the first of its kind as Florida has also seen advocates getting their message out this way.

Victory for Romney in Florida, But could it be a Victory for Patients?

mitt romney

The GOP primaries have experienced intense debate and battles from the candidates.  Prior to the process even started, Mitt Romney was considered both your hands lower front runner.  When the process was going ahead the press was treated with a unforeseen surprises. First,  Bachmann Wanted won the very first official event from the election campaign, the Ames Iowa Hay Poll.  After that we had the fall and rise of Ron Perry and Herman Cain (due largely for their promoted mistakes).

Even while lately like a couple of days ago, Newt Gingrich might have been considered the leader for that GOP nomination, but his comments on The spanish language being “the word what from the ghetto” considered him lower in a condition having a large Hispanic population.  Furthermore, Gingrich was without his best debate performances prior to the Florida election.  He was removed message and elevated eye brows together with his comments regarding his desire to have a moon base.  Although Gingrich still obtained well with individuals who connect themselves as “very conservative”, many voters were worried about the perception that he’s not really a viable candidate for any national election.

With Tuesday’s victory, Mitt Romney has clearly established themself because the leader.  Mitt Romney cruised to victory by winning 46% from the election instead of Gingrich’s 32% (Ron Santorum finished 3rd with 13% and Ron Paul trailed within the 4th position with 7%) .  Following a reduction in Sc lately, team Romney was charged with being too soft and experts predicted the former Governor will have to intensify his attacks on Newt Gingrich.  This is just what happened as Romney considerably outspent the previous Speaker of the home through campaign contributions as well as with the aid of Super Pacs.

With patients already being disenfranchised with how Leader Obama has handled medicinal marijuana, many were wishing for any GOP candidate who’d enact true reform.  While Ron Paul might be that candidate, his performances within the primaries appear to become losing momentum with every passing condition primary (a number of this really is because of his supposed racist news letters).  Although an advocate of medicinal marijuana throughout the eighties, Newt Gingrich lately made very aggressive comments against medicinal marijuana as well as went so far as adoring Singapore’s criminal justice system (Singapore is renowned for its very violent and harsh legislation).

Mitt Romney has lengthy mentioned his opposition to medicinal marijuana.  Reviews have resurfaced about him leaving without responding to questions from the motorized wheel chair bound patient struggling with muscular dystrophy who found relief with cannabis.  Furthermore, battling patients won’t find encouragement using the statement Mitt Romney made yesterday.  Within an interview with CNN’s Soledad O’brien, Mitt Romney mentioned he “was not worried about the poor.”  He stated his focus was around the middle-class since the weakest within our nation “have a security net”.  Many experts and patients question precisely what back-up he’s mentioning too.  He clearly doesn’t have aim of marketing cheaper alternative treatment which may give a true back-up for America’s poor.

Decade Lengthy Fight over Stem Cells Mirrors the higher Division within the U . s . States

stem cells

The U . s . States could achieve superpower status due largely simply to presuming a leadership role in technology, financial aspects and medicine.  However, round the turn from the Millennium, the interconnected global community would see great change.  The Euro was formally introduced around the world real estate markets in 1999 and would soar for the following decade before the European Sovereign Debt Crisis in ’09.  Following 1999, the U . s . States shocked the planet using its questionable handling from the 2000 presidential election, which saw the ultimate choices be performed in court rather than via a recount of hanging chads and confusing Florida ballots.  Many nations were surprised to determine the U . s . States find it difficult to do an election, a standard feature of the American regulating system.

The hotly contested 2000 election outlined the deep split within the American public.  Matching the election in stride both in division along with a weakening in our world perception was the stem cell debate.   In 2000, The U.S. National Institutes of Health’s Recommendations mentioned “…research including human pluripotent stem cells…promises new remedies and possible cures for a lot of debilitating illnesses and injuries, including Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, ms, burns and spinal-cord injuries. The NIH thinks the possibility medical advantages of human pluripotent stem cell technology are compelling and worth pursuit in compliance with appropriate ethical standards.”

However, America’s division wasn’t moved towards the public.  In August of 2001, Leader G.W. Rose bush introduced he would only permit federal funding for that experimentation from the existing 60 lines of stem cells.  Researchers would find frustration as a number of these lines were contaminated and useless.  The problem arrived at Leader Rose bush again in 2006, and even though the U.S. Senate chosen 63-37 in support of Federal Funding for stem cell research, the balance could be struck lower because the leader used his first veto, declaring the embryonic stem cell research bill would “cross an ethical boundary.”

Marijuana advocates have observed similar frustration.  Because the evidence is put together and also the potential advantages of cannabis grow regularly, experts still occupy that old layer of fingers within their ears and yelling noisally.  Much like stem cell research, many sick people are not reaping helpful benefits from treatment due to socio/political squabbles.  Experts of marijuana still tell you they are gathering the data so that as people for example Congressman Barney Frank explain, they ought to be incredibly slow visitors.  Stem cells can ill pay the same decades lengthy research blackout that marijuana has experienced.

Fortunately, stem cell studies have found its way into the news cycle.  In the past it had been learned that entire rodents might be produced using their skin cells.  While it didn’t dominate the press, the breakthrough was revolutionary as creation had a completely new meaning.  Using the problem a huge advance, it had been lately introduced that researchers could reverse aging in rodents, with MSNBC explaining it as being “The Actual Benjamin Button“.  Once injected with youthful stem cells the rodents started exhibiting energetic behavior more reflective of more youthful rodents.  The storyline is groundbreaking and could finally give a map for our earliest quests, finding the elixir of youth.

Stem Cells, Marijuana, and America’s position within the global community have seen quite the shakeup in the last decade.  However, having a battling health care system, marijuana and stem cells provide a lot hope for future years.  The U . s . States is within desperate necessity of new domestic industries along with the Euro suffering, oneness on these key issues can propel us right into a leadership role for any new technological and compassionate age.
